    Best of 2008

I have not seen anyone ask yet.......(Sorry if I missed a previous post ops: )

So what were,…… say.....the best three or so movies you watched at home this year? Doesn’t matter to me when they were made, just that you watched them during 2008.

    For me:

La Haine – This epic about a trio of teenage best-friends from the Paris slums, a bit surprising being that they are a Jew an Arab and an African, (I still defend the line of thinking that says racism is taught and does not occur naturally in children) tells a story so true and human, I swear Shakespeare came back from the grave to write this one.

This story haunted me for days afterwards, always the sign of a great film. Be aware this is a FL movie with English subtitles.

No Country for Old Men – My favorite genre, blood and evil intent. What’s not to like about this one, & besides, Tommy was born for this role.

The Kite Runner – My favorite for cinematography and a journey of exploration into the human condition.

Sweeney Todd – What can be said; tons of blood and evil intent,,, My favorite genre and my favorite actor as he not only carries forth the grand tradition of Vincent Price and Poe, but does it with a song and dance! Now that’s what I call “Entertainment”!
Nothing could come close to topping this one, IMHO. ;x(

    Honorable mention goes to:

Wall-E – My grandchildren and I had a great time watching this one over the holidays.
Grand children, “DaDa Bill! DaDa Bill! Why does the room keep shaking?" :E
DaDa Bill, “Heh Heh Heh” in his most evil of sounding laugh. :B

The Host - This is a real sleeper in the Sci-Fi Godzilla genre that just blew me away, and I don’t often care at all for this type of film. From South Korea, it is dubbed in English, but the subtitles read V differently than the spoken script. I ran it with the English subtitles and the English dubbed audio and got much more from the subtitles. Either way, V much worth a rental, IMHO.

I did not like Sweeny Todd at all... one a few I wish I could return.

No Country for old Men - Awesome, but if I had to pick 3, in no order-

    Batman The Dark Knight

    Iron Man

    3:10 to Yuma

Actually... I think I would have to put them in that order... Funny.

-Resident Evil Trilogy just watched these on sunday with a friend.

These aren't in any order, and i've seen a lot of realy good movies this year, especially horor (my favorite genre)

I found that though 2008 had some good movies, there were very few outstanding ones. A few I particularly liked:

            No Country For Old Men
            3:10 To Yuma
            The Bank Job
            Street Kings
            In Bruges

George, I'm curious what you thought of "In Bruges". I know that some have liked that, but I just didn't see the appeal.

I think the 2 best movies I saw this year were both foreign.

                  The Lives Of Others

                  The Counterfeiters

                  Wall E was good.
                  Ironman was good.
                  Others were good.

The Lives Of Others and The Counterfeiters were excellent.

I'll second that. Both are at the top of my list. I'd also rate Wall-E, The Dark Night, The Assassination of Jesse James, and Into the Wild as my favorites.

                            Definitely:

                            Wall-E
                            Dark Knight
                            Iron Man

I'm waiting on my Blu-ray to show up so it's still a candidate:

                            Appaloosa

Some others of interest, but who knows when I'll get to see them:

                            Gran Torino
                            Valkyrie
                            .

For me and in no particular order

Dark Knight - The new benchmark for action/hero movies.

In Bruges - Darkly funny, quirky, tense, full of pathos and tragedy. Hit me hard. it's not the last time we'll see Gleeson and Farrell team up - there's chemistry there.

Burn After Reading - Another screwball black comedy from the Coen Bros. Full of stupid people doing stupid things with a great cast.

Slumdog Millionaire - Sure, it's sentimental but you'd want to have one hell of a hard heart not to feel this movie. A hugely enjoyable, energetic film.

Stepbrothers - Stupid beyond stupidity but it made me laugh really hard. The sign of a good comedy.

Chris, go down to Vincent's post #15. He pretty much sums up what I loved about In Bruges. It's definitely one of the quirky ones, with some dark humor thrown in. But best of all, great performances by Farrell and Gleeson.

Yeah, I just saw Eagle Eye last night. As monstrously implausible as it is, I still enjoyed it a good deal. Some very, very good action scenes. Saw it in the theater, but I could tell that as a BD it would ROCK in a private HT with a good sub.

Like we've said here before, many times, though, I just don't see what all the fuss is about Shia LeBeouf. He's just fine for an occasional quirky kid actor, but man, he keeps getting these roles, over and over, back to back, of the "bad, tough guy". Doesn't fit him.

The best movie I watched last year (or this young year) is No Country for Old Men, easily. The superhero stuff is fun ( I bought TDK and loved it), but it's not stick-to-yer-ribs like the former. My ribs, anyway.
