    The Lives of Others

Last Academy Awards, I was really rooting for Pan's Labyrinth to win Best Foreign Film, so, in my disappointment that it didn't, I wanted to see the film that did win - the German film, The Lives of Others.

Without giving too much away, it takes place in East Germany (it does have subtitles) before the fall of the wall, at a time when the East German Secret Police, the Stasi, wire tap and employ other means of surveillance on anyone who might, even for the slightest of reasons, be deemed an enemy of the state and concentrates on the following of a suspected playwright.

The film generates tension through the implied consequences if the playwright is found to be guilty as suspected and gains its power through our understanding of the situation and the dynamic characters it portrays.

Overall, I thought the film to be very good and deserving of its recognition by the Academy, albeit I still would have cast my vote for Pan's Labyrinth.

I saw this on the rental rack and wondered about it. Maybe I'll give it a spin.

Thanks for the bump, Kieth, I had forgotten about this one.
It is in my netflex queue now.

      Funny thing about that netflix..........
I signed up about 3 months ago, the three at a time package..........
I find that I miss roaming the video store now, as that was how I found many of less mainstream, indi and foreign films my wife and I enjoy. Actually, she won't even use netflix, and consequently, I am constantly chastised for my 'poor' selections!

There is much to be said for the shopping experience at the brick-&-mortar stores, though I do resent many of the policies the big chains have. In a way, it has similarities to the CD vs Vinyl experience. Since the advent of CD's, some of us long for the tactile and physical involvement required when spinning LP's.

Sounds like a must see. Your post has made me think that all the nominees for Best Foreign Film may be excellent viewing choices. After all they are picking a short list of movies from all over the world. I agree that Pan's Labyrinth was deserving of the award. -Russ
