A powerful indie film written by Sam Shepard and directed by Wim Wenders. Sam stars as a western actor whose career has bottomed out and him with it, finding his only solace in a bottle. Feeling life is slipping by, leaving him feeling he has missed something,he suddenly runs out on a film in production and goes to see his mother, superbly played by Eva Marie Saint. She tells him she has heard from a woman in Montana ( Jessica Lange ) who said she gave birth to Shepard's son. This apparently happened several years ago when he was at the top of his game and filming for several weeks in Montana. He didn't realize he had a son and decides to go to Montana to see him and the woman Shepard had an affair with. He not only meets the woman and his son, he makes another discovery as well.
This is pretty powerful stuff, but you won't like it if you are not into character-driven stories. There is good writing by old Sam and top notch acting by Jessica Lange ( Sam's wife ) along with a very strong performance by Sarah Polley. Others in the cast include Tim Roth ( who must find and bring Shepard back to complete the film ), George Kennedy, Tim Matheson and a good performance by Gabriel Mann, who plays Sam's son.
This one will leave you thinking a bit long after the credits fade to black.
