    New Ghibli (Miyazaki) R1 releases

For you Spirited Away fans, tomorrow Disney is releasing the english dubbed region 1 versions of three more titles (finally).

Porco Rosso (My favorite of his films so far)
    NausicaƤ Valley of the Wind
    The Cat Returns

I'm picking up all three, have not seen the latter two.

My wife is from Japan. Nausicaa is one of her all time favorites (Mostly because of the music and storyline message). I have seen the Japanese version several times with her translating for me. She has been anxiously waiting for the English version so I can get the full effect. She is sure it will be one of my favorites also. She has told me that the movie is an adaptation of a Manga series (many more stories in the Manga).

BTW Have you seen "Grave of the Fireflies"? Be prepared! Saddest movie ever made
Also: Looking forward to the widescreen release of "My Friend Totoro" :T

I need a small correction on The Cat Returns, Miyazaki was involved but did not direct that effort.

I'm starting to pick up more and more Japanese animated titles lately. Worst buy had a 10% off any anime title with purchase of the 3 above so I ended up grabbing Cowboy Bebop (the movie) as well. I have heard about Grave of the Fireflies (with the same warning you give) before. May get that as well down the road. Also waiting until I can find a copy of Ghost int eh Shell 2: Innocence with the unmucked up subtitles, but no luck locally yet.

Wish I'd gotten around to modding my DVD megachanger to region free SDI sooner, then I could pick some of these on my monthly sojourns to Tokyo and watch them.

Watched Nausicaa last night. I was a bit dissappointed in the sound, sounded like it was done in Mono . Really a shame, has so much potential for surround oportunities.

Spirited Away was my first Miyazaki film a couple of months ago and I was really enchanted by it. I had seen several Manga movies before (Patlabor being one of my favourites) but I thought this was something very special. Since then I really wanted to see more of Miyazaki’s work. A few weeks ago I saw Princes Mononoke. And again I was blown away! :E
Because I borrowed it from a friend, I am on the lookout for an ultimate edition, with English subtitles that follow the Japanese speech.

Do the above mentioned releases contain the original Japanese speech, or are they dubbed only?

          Regards,
          Jurgen

Nausicaa has choice for Japanese dialog. Not sure about the others, but I would venture to guess that they also have Japanese as a choice but am not sure about English subtitles during the Japanese dialog. I will try to check tonight.
I currently have NausicaƤ of the Valley of Wind, Laputa: Castle in the Sky, My Neighbor Totoro (VHS; waiting for DVD release in wide screen), Grave of the Fireflies, Kiki's Delivery Service, Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, and have seen Porco Rosso on VHS. I enjoyed all. :T

All the disney releases of his films have original Japanese track in 2.0 with english subs as an option. They have not worked their way through his whole catalog yet though.

Watched Porco Rosso over the weekend. Nicely done disk. I watched with the English redub track. Thought they did a pretty nice job voice casting (albeit recyclig a lot of the talent used on other Disney/Miyazaki redubs), preserving the intent and feeling of the dialog.

Still like this best of all his films. Dad and stepmom liked it quite a bit also.

                      The mummy returns again!
                      by Andrew Pratt
HOLLYWOOD -- According to Sean Daniels, there's little doubt there will be a second sequel to The Mummy.

"The Mummy Returns grossed $431 million US worldwide. I'd say that's a pretty good indication audiences around the world want the adventure to continue," says Daniels, who...

Panasonic PT AE 700 in Japanese
                      by pkbell
I just made a deal on a Panasonic PT AE 700 in Japanese that is sold in Japan. The deal was great but the menu is in Japanese. I would think there is a hidden menu in the unit to change the Language to the English language. I might have to learn Japanese to run the thing.

Run into this (for me) new guy Agatsuma playing a 3 stringed old Japaneese Tsugaru-Shamisen. Shamisen originates from China and the Japanese made there own way with it and this guy for sure did his. It's a pretty cool sound that I got hooked on right away.

This week Domo Records is running...

                      by joegibs
My new years resolution this year was 2 things, pay bills the day they show up instead of procrastinating, and the other to blow my tax returns on something fun instead of dumping it into my house like i've done for the past 3 years. The house still has plenty of projects that need doing, but damnit,...
