Rent THE GRUDGE. Very basic story, and probably too many " what's behind this door" scenes, but when it was creepy, it was CREEPY. If you like ghost movies you will probably like this one. As with THE RING, THE GRUDGE was originally a Japanese film.
Want to get creeped out ?

Hey George, having "Buffy" in it doesn't hurt either. At least IMO.

I have to agree, I never was scared, but a day later I had that boy sounding like a cat and that Ghost with the eyes scaring that older women to death still in my mind as I am laying down to go to sleep. Creepy is a good adjective for this one.- Bottom

SQ in a couple scenes really creeps you out. There is one in particular that has someone running around the room that you can not see and they litteraly go from RR, to RL, to FL to CC to RF channel multiple times....really adds to the creepiness of this one.Originally posted by AzekeOkay, I was wondering about this film, seems like a good rental. How's the SQ?
I read the original Japanese version Ju-Grudge I believe, was even better, anyone heard or seen this?

Yeah excellent surround effects at times. Now and then the sub will kick in, too and rattle your teeth.- Bottom

SQ was good at times, great in others. PQ is another story, I thought it was a bad transfer overall. anyone else agree?- Bottom

Sometimes I am a bit oblivious to this aspect but I did notice some grain and what looked like a piece of trash maybe in one shot. The trash shot in question was a white spot on the right third of the screen about half the size of a dime on one of the shots of downtown with all the colors of the differant signs. It appeared only once that I noticed and was brief. I really usually don't comment on this type of thing unless it is really odviously good because I can not tell the differance in a bad transfer and the directors intent.- Bottom

true, we dont know the intent of the director...Originally posted by FoxmanSometimes I am a bit oblivious to this aspect but I did notice some grain and what looked like a piece of trash maybe in one shot. so in that case...
does anyone agree that the PQ overall was poopy? I would have liked a very clean picture but we cant have everything. This is one of those movies where sound is everything though, so the PQ didnt hurt it.- Bottom

I didn't think the PQ was bad, it just didn't pop . But as stated by others, perhaps the dull look was intended by the director.- Bottom

Rented It.
Haven't decided whether or not I will buy it. Buffy (watched 1 episode of her show, and never watched one again) rubs me the wrong way. Too much of Neve Campbell (sp?) with the 90s horror-queen look. I also thought the wife of the teacher at the beginning of the film was very poorly casted. The antagonist ghost(s) were phenomenal, as was the filming style used to give them the creepy essence they had. Unfortunately I thought the story-line was poor, and there were some parts to the story that could have been left out. The jumping around in time also seemed misplaced for this type of film.
I'm considering buying this movie for the ghosts alone. What a fantastic job with them. Definetly worth atleast a rent. Shame on Ebert for putting this on his 10 worst list.

My wifes aunt tells these jokes in German that aboslutely kill fluent German-speaking folks. When I ask for the translation I hear the joke and go  :?
Just not funny....
The Grudge suffers the same fate.
I'll give it some creepy moments of tension....but overall the execution is poorly-done.
Nick's right, casting is wrong....Gellar doesn't work.
Nice sound-effects....but it's capitalizing on the Ring's success and ulitmately fails....miserably.
Take the Ring,
Add the Exorcist and Amityville (in a bad sort of way)
Add a bigger budget with peculiarly poor animatronics and boo-scare moments
Appeal to teens (hence the pg-13 rating) so that you will get box-office $ (justifying a piss-poor sequel)
really mess things up bad with a crappy ending
===================================
= The Grudge
1.5 hours of my life ultimately wasted
Rent first as YMMV
I'll give it 2/5.Sell crazy someplace else, we're all stocked up here.- Bottom
