    Alien Vs Predator

    Rented it.
    Typical Fox movie...

I enjoyed the Alien movies, so figured I'd get this to watch.
Corny plots, lines, characters, music, etc.

    A waste of time.

    :1: out of :5: :thud:

    Nicholas,

I beg to differ, I actually enjoyed this movie. It's definitely not your typical Alien movie, but at least it answered some questions. CG was pretty good, PQ was good, SQ was very good esp., in DTS. Good use of the surround matrix. I rated it :25: stars out of :5: for entertainment value. YMMV of course.

I saw this insult to the Alien and Predator franchises just when it came out at the theater and had to watch it again last night when my curious buddy rented it.

needless to say my very poor opinion of it hasn't changed. This is a huge slap in the face to both the Alien and Predator franchise.

Both of those used the human element to get you into the movie and also setup the tension. Frankly there was none in this one. They were merely fodder and when they "act" if you call it that, they did such a poor job it made you go "WTF".

The Alien and Predator franchises also had good action. This movie has barely any and what it did have was utterly atrocious.

Needless to say if you want to get hammered drunk and see who dies first(you of laughter at how bad this film is) or who dies first in the movie then by all means.

0 out of 5. There is no entertainment or redeeming value in this movie.

              David,
It's an assumption that we all are IMHO when we post a movie review. Not everyone likes the same movie(as evidence here) and everyone has an opinion on them. Someone shouldn't take offense to a negative review unless it specifcally mentions them and then that's your job. So unless someone outright mentions "Only morons will lvoe this movie " or something along those lines, I think the comments thus far are fine.

Im a fan of both species, so it doesnt matter how the movie was, Id see it again and again.

The 2 could sit at a table doing nothing but facing one another and Id buy it, hahahaha

                        In my humble opinion...

Not going to reveal plots, just describe a non-crucial scene.
                        I'll place spolier tags anyways.

One of the opening scenes has a girl ice climbing in "Nepal" with no ropes by herself. Then her phone rings. She places an icescrew in less than 2 seconds, and chats away on her phone..

The rest of the movie continues to degrade in this fashion.
You know how FOX News dumbs down the news? This movie was like that.
If you don't know what I mean by this, you won't understand what I'm trying to say.

I'd like to mention once more though that I loved the Alien series. Wasn't big on the Predator films, but they were much better than AVP.

                        Just my $0.02

That's because it's Hollywood Nicholas, they don't really need ropes, LOL. I also see those mountains in the backgroud of your Avatar.

I enjoy blockbusters as much as the next person. Its just that sometimes things are so fake/corny that it makes you roll your eyes and squirm. I had this sensation 5 or 6 times while watching AVP. My favorite example of this is in the film Contact (which I did enjoy and own) when they're deciphering the encoded message and someone says "Hydrogen times Pi". 5 minutes with a technical advisor could have made some of these scenes watchable.

The plot and character development in AVP was very shallow. People appeared, spit off their life story, got seperated from the main group, and died. Almost fell asleep through part of it.

It was definetly missing the human element (among other things) that was so very present in the Alien films. You can feel the fear when watching Ripley cringe with the Alien's jaws inches from her face. It's thick and musky, makes your heart race.

EDIT: Forgot to add IMHO :B

I agree with you Nicholas, the movie definitely didn't not develop any inter-personal relationships with the characters, which definitely would have made it a better film. I just viewed the film as a popcorn flick ergo my rating based on entertainment value, if the characters would have been further developed that would have been bonus points.

Well, we have at least provided, shall I say, some curiosity about the film.

My opinion does not necessarily reflect the opinion of others.

Speaking of the Alien and Predator series, I'd love to know who likes which series best!

As I said above, I really enjoyed Ripley and the Alien films. "Ahnold" was a little too much for me in Predator. I did like the storyline behind it though. "The Hunt" is a topic in psychology that is very interesting. Has anyone seen the film "Surviving the Game?". A great example of "The Hunt".

AvP needed a great director to work like James cameron or Ridley Scott but they know that the idea while good on paper is very hard to translate to a believeable (in the movie sense) story. While the effects were nice, sound was incredible thats all it was, and the characters were very forgetable. What I didn't like was the end showing a mutated alien with a predator head?? Whats with that, you dont see aliens looking like us when they burst out just dumm. Yes I know it happend in Alien 3 and that was the start of the franchise going in the wrong direction. Nicholas I agree with everything you have said except the Arnold part as he was made for that role. Of course back then when making movies you had to have a huge action hero that could look good with a gun and he was it. I cant understand how such bad movies come out after the director/producers sit down and watch their materpiece and go yep thats great the people will love it. The latest Star Wars movies are classic examples of great effects but shallow character design and average story. We as movies nuts have seen what directors can do in the field of special effects and as much as it's nice to see, I for one am getting tired of it. I would much rather see great character development excellent score great story rather than mind blowing effects which can just take it all away from the entire experience. Oh well we can't get everything we want but lets hope the industry goes back to when movies were movies not just eye candy. This is of course is just my opinion

Well I just got finished watching AVP. I don't think it is as bad as some said, but they are entitled to their opinion. For me it was a check your brain at the door, sit back and watch the action kind of movie. To be honest though, I wouldn't want to see it again.

Pretty amazing low end on the DTS track. PQ is okay as long as your PJ or TV is calibrated properly for black levels. There was a lot going on in the shadows in this flick.

I watched it tonight and it was a nice evenings' entertainment, not more not less. Great PQ and SQ though.

By the way, although I like the predator as "a person" he or she can't stand in the shadow of the Alien series (although one movie is a (bit) better than the other). Ripley is one of my alltime greats (and a damned good looker as well)

                                          IMHO

The missing human element was one of the biggest flaws of the movie.

I did not want to read any of the comments here before going on to watch it last night. I must say (although it's been said many times on this thread) that I too was dissapointed. Although I found some of the scenes were great with some suspense, I was not out-of-breath at the end of this so called action movie. I hope that they'll do better on the sequal, we mybe in for some supprises.

I feel like george that this was a pretty fun movie to watch if you checked the brain at the door on the way in. Sure it likely doesn't live up to the Alien or Predator series but I found it a quick paced no nonsense popcorn flick with better then average effects and a great sound track.

This movie was built around a great soundtrack and some nice visuals and nothing else. It takes a serious crap on the the original Alien and Predator movie and is really an utter waste of time.

Wooden, forgettable cast (no strong lead). Poor premise for a story. Just dumb, really dumb.

I have to admit that I'm a bigger Alien/Aliens fan than I ever was a Predator fan (but I still enjoy Predator, mostly for Arnie and the boys) but this has only the creatures in common with those movies

It was fun to see these 2 titans clash but on the whole this movie was a poor effort.

Very disappointing. :1: / :5: (maybe 1.5 for solid effects and sound and that they kept it at 90 mins...because any longer would have been really painful)

Stick with the original movies. I can watch those anythime....I can't say I'll likely give this another watch.

I liked it, but then again I'm a big Alien fan. BUT... two things that messed up the movie. One, they made a compassionate Predator!?! WTF. Second, the Queen Alien was as big as the t-rex in Jurassic park! lol It's was pretty good, but nothing spectacular. I do agree with most in that the audio was awesome. This movie truely used the surround effects to it's fullest with the movements of the Aliens. Really good movie to show off how good your movie can image the surround effects.

I havent read this whole thread, but (IMO ) we need to exercise caution when worring over certain details in Sci Fi movies. Case in point is Star Wars. According to NASA those ships wouldnt really make those rumbeling sounds when flying through space, so does that detract from the quality of the movie??

Come on guys we can't watch a movie like AVP or Freddie v/s Jason or any other commercial sci fi / horror flick and worry over things like talking one a cell phone while hanging from a rope that isnt there.

Another movie that comes to mind is the Mission Impossible movies. If those tricks could be done in real life they would have to call it mission Possible wouldnt they??

Lighten up, its mindless entertainment when it comes to these movies.

Not worrying foxman, just sometimes the scene is overly corny. I guess I'm just someone who appreciates technical accuracy. I think in this film (for me) the thing that did it in (IMHO) was the dry acting and above mentioned spoofs.

Anyone seen "The Big Lebowski"? If you can remember the scene where Jeff Bridges & Julianne Moore are watching "Logjammin", thats kinda the way I felt (TBL is one of my fav movies).

                                                        "Who is it?"
"The cable repair man, you want me fix tv?"

Oh totally agree. I lost complete respect at that point. Made zero sense and was out of line with the original character. This "new" story-line techincally would deviate from the original premise of Predator.

The queen was always big but I don't think she was that big. Then again she was only ever presented in one movie and there's no such thing as an "alien" so there's nothing set in stone that she has a certain size. Maybe they get biigger with age?

Note to self, avoid Paul W.S. Anderson movies at all costs....he's a poor writer/director etc...(IMO) I just don't jive with his stuff, Resident Evil is another example.

I understand that but in some regards the original predator/alien movies were the same way.

The whole premise of the alien and predator series focuses on the human element. In this case the human element was totally wasted and ignored. We essentially felt nothing for the characters meanwhile we all felt fear at some point and we're gripping to our chairs when watching Alien/Alien 2 and in some regards Predator.

It really had nothing to do with the Alien or Predator series and that is why it is pretty much a slap in the face to those franchises and in that regard its a POS.

That doesn't mean I don't like these types of movies. Heck if you could just browse my collection you'd see that.

I do get some of what some of you are concerned over. IE: at the end with the Alien. I guess it's a matter of perspective going in. I had no doubt there would be a lack of story and connection to the quality of the original series based on reviews of the movie.

Freddie v/s Jason was the same way to me. Anyone who truely liked these movies seemed to have one of two perspectives. On one hand they liked the action, SQ and PQ or on the other hand they were such big fans of the series that they will take whatever they can get that perpetuates that particular series. Either way its mindless. The movie lacking the human elimant didnt bother me because it's not about us as, much as it's about them.

I thought the Predator helping the lady was a stretch as was the Alien at the end, but neither really bothered me since I had already checked my brain.

I would classify the original series of Aliens and Predator as Sci Fi Horror, I would classify this as Action/Sci Fi, thats a little differant genre but no matter all three genre's have there share of quality and crappy movies.

It is what it is...good action, SQ, PQ and bad details & acting
