Want to buy a $5,000 set of movies?

Amazon.com is offering the ENTIRE set of Criterion Collection DVD's ever made. There's 241 different movies on 282 discs. Amazon "lists" this at $7,500, with a sale price of $4,999. And hey, you get free shipping, so what a deal, right?

$20.74 per movie, not bad for Criterions. I'd have to buy a bigger house so I'd have a place to store them though, which would bring the price up to... (clickity clickity rat-at-at-at-tat) uhhh.. $1,058 per movie!

Do I get a credit for my already-purchased Criterions? :B

Also, street price for DVDs is typically 50% or less of their MSRP, so I'm only gonna bid $3500.

      Yeah. Riiiiiiiight.

I've got the shelf space (as soon as I assemble the new shelves) :>) but the problem with a really big "box set" like that is that you have to accept their selection of titles. Although Criterion puts out some excellent editions, not all of them interest me or I probably would already have them.

If you exclude the titles in which you have no interest from your count, the per-disc cost goes way up... kind of like the calculation I made with the "Aliens" box set. I had no desire to purchase "Alien3" or "Alien Resurrection", but they were included in the set, so effectively, I paid double for "Alien" and "Aliens".

Another factor mitigating against a set like this, of course, is that even if you want everything included, the going-in price looks prohibitive. Shelling out $21 a pop, spread out over several years, is a lot easier for the mind to wrap around (even if the net effect on the wallet is the same). :>)

Yeah, definitely a few minuses with this set. Another one is that it does NOT include the out-of-print titles that are highly sought after right now, since they're simply not produced anymore.

True Bing, but they were generally excellent PQ-wise for non-enhanced DVDs.

David, true-dat, but still..... Most DVDs this day look better. Sure the transfer is meticuliously done, however they are still lower on the resolution chain at the end of the day.

I think you just have to be "into" those Avant garde Criterion titles, to over look the non-anamorphic short comings.

Sounds like a Criterian garage sale to me.
