    The Clearing

Stars Robert Redford as a wealthy businessman who is kidnapped for ransom by Willem Dafoe. Also stars Helen Mirren as Redford's wife. Prior to the kidnapping, the relationship between Redford and Mirren's characters has been strained due to an affair Redford had with one of his employees. Can't say much without taking something away from the conclusion, but the kidnapping and its aftermath brings new meaning to their particular relationship.

Redford, who at 67 still looks darn good, is excellent as usual, as is Dafoe and Mirren. It is the acting of these three people, plus a well turned story, that made this a rewarding 90 something minutes. It is mostly a quiet movie, so your system won't get much of a workout, but the PQ is excellent. If you like drama and the actors mentioned, you'll like this film.

Oooh, sounds like a good one, George. :yesnod:

This isn't a title I'm familiar with. Guess it's time for a stop by Hollywood Video on the way home. Thanks!

For those who are interested. The movie is directed by a Dutchman and is (roughly) based on the abduction and murder of a member of a famous and very rich Dutch family (called Hein). They own several very large food/grocery chains (in Europe and the Americas).

The movie itself is one of the best of the year and in its kind.

This film by Director Lasse Hallstrom ( Cider House Rules, Chocolat and The Shipping News to name a few by him ) was actually made in 2004 but for whatever reason only made to the theaters in the early part of 2006, and before you can blink an eye it is on dvd. Again, a film that critics were unkind...

SHADOWBOXER is a neo-noir film on steroids
              by George Bellefontaine
Pickings were lean at the local Blockbuster so I ended up renting Shadowboxer, a film I had passed up a few times because I thought it was just another Cuba Gooding Jr.action flick ( he has made a few recently) but boy was I wrong.

Shadowboxer stars Helen Mirren, Cuba Gooding Jr. and...

              Not for the masses
              by George Bellefontaine
That's The Last Castle. No it's not for the masses( the reason why it wasn't a blockbuster) it's for those of us who appreciate a well written story with a beginning, a middle, and end, and top notch drama with acting that makes you believe that all this is possible.
This is a story about leadership,...

              Spy Game's Okay
              by George Bellefontaine
Since it's told mostly in flashback, the pace really seems slow. This is not a great film, but it's such a pleasure to watch an old pro like Redford do his thing that you can't help but like the film. There's not too much of Brad Pitt here (okay with me) , it's really Redford's film . If you are not...
