    HP: GoF news

Ralph Fiennes in 'Harry Potter' movie
By ANTHONY BREZNICAN -- Associated Press
LOS ANGELES -- He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named has been named.

Ralph Fiennes, who played memorable evil guys in "Red Dragon" and "Schindler's List," has signed on to portray the wicked warlock Voldemort in the next "Harry Potter" movie, Warner Bros. announced Wednesday.

Voldemort is so bad that the magical characters in author J.K. Rowling's stories do their best not to speak his name aloud.

In the first three installments of the saga, a deadly magic spell meant for a baby Harry Potter backfired and deprived him of a body. So only his spirit wrought havoc in "The Sorcerer's Stone," "The Chamber of Secrets" and the recent "Prisoner of Azkaban."

But Voldemort finally returns in the flesh in part four: "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire."

Filming has been under way on "Goblet" since June 25, mainly with star Daniel Racliffe as the boy-wizard, and co-stars Rupert Grint and Emma Watson as his pals Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger. Fiennes has not yet filmed any scenes.

Other additions to the cast include Brendan Gleeson ("Troy," "The Village" and "Cold Mountain") as Potter's new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher, the fearsome Mad-Eye Moody, and Miranda Richardson, ("The Crying Game," "Sleepy Hollow") as Rita Skeeter, a gossip columnist for a magical newspaper.

The cast also includes Robert Pattinson as Hogwarts student Cedric Diggory, Stanislav Ianevski as Quidditch star Viktor Krum, French actress Clemence Poesy as the heart-fluttering visiting student Fleur Delacour, and Katie Leung as Potter's love-interest and Quidditch rival Cho Chang.

"Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire," directed by "Four Weddings and a Funeral" filmmaker Mike Newell, is scheduled for theatrical release in November 2005.

Fiennes has a broad range as an actor. I can see him in this role.

Ralph Fiennes, who played memorable evil guys in "Red Dragon" and "Schindler's List," ...
Did the author of that news piece actually watch "Schindler's List"? The title character played by Ralph Fiennes may have been self centered and mercenary (at first) but hardly "evil". An evil person wouldn't have sacrificed his fortune to save so many people from otherwise certain destruction. Nevertheless, Fiennes has the acting chops to pull off a convincingly "evil" (morally reprehensible, causing harm) character if that is what is called for in the script.

Fiennes played Amon Goeth, the not so nice guy running the camp, not Oskar Schindler Burke. Though Goeth's reeedming qualities were to a fairly large degree helping Oskar save those people or at least turned his eye from a lot of stuff that wouldn't have made his superiors none too happy.

Whoops! From a quick look at the publicity shot that came up when I searched on Ralph Fiennes, I had him confused with Liam Neeson, who played Schindler. Granted, Goeth's "look the other way" actions helped Schindler's efforts by omission, if not overt aid, but there was plenty of other evidence that Goeth was either evil or crazy or both, such as murdering the female engineer who was warning about improper drainage threatening the foundation of a building under construction and then telling his troops to do what she had said to correct the problem.

Either one of those actors (Fiennes or Neeson) would do a good job in just about any role handed to them.

Hopefully my post didn't come across as defending Goeth. Basically I was trying to say if there was anything that could have been deemed a "good" quality was his "aid" to Oskar. Other than that yeah, Goeth was pretty much despicable.

Agreed, both good actors though :T

Hmmm, a Harry Schindler's Potter List?

Seriously tho' Ralph Fiennes is an excellent choice. Not only was he very good in Red Dragon and Schindler's List, I enjoyed him in Strange Days, too - even if the story itself was rather weird.
