    Harry Potter

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban Movie Review:

As Harry Potter (Radcliffe) returns to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry for his third year, he learns that Sirius Black (Oldman) has escaped from Azkaban prison and his life is in danger. With the help of Ron (Grint) and Hermione (Watson), the three delve into mystery that surrounds Black’s imprisonment because all they know is that he had something to do with the death of Harry’s parents and he may be looking for him to finish the job.

With The Philosopher’s (Sorcerer’s) Stone and The Chamber of Secrets setting new standards for family entertainment, can the third movie keep up this very high benchmark? The answer is an emphatic yes!

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban pushes the franchise to even greater heights. Regarded as the best book in the series by Potter fans and Muggles alike, this is a much darker look into this magical world.

As Harry, Ron and Hermione turn thirteen, more adult problems and revelations come their way. Harry starts to learn more about his past, as he confronts the man who is said to have betrayed his parents to the wizard who’s name should not be spoken. Hermione has to come to terms with the fact that she might not been able to excel as much as she would like at Hogwarts without any magical help. Ron is Ron but he might have to acknowledge the fact that he might be getting close to a certain someone.

The character’s growth is reflected in the performances of the three leads. Emma Watson shines as Hermione, with a much larger part than in the second film. She is becoming a very good actress as the young witch continues to deal with her mixed heritage and the constant abuse from Malfroy. Rupert Grint again provides the laughs as Ron Weasley but the character is becoming a more accomplished figure and not just Harry’s accident prone and amusing friend. It is Daniel Radcliffe who shows the biggest advance and at last, reveals the reason why he got one of the most coveted child roles in movie history. As the character has grown, so has the actor as Radcliff as he finally gets to grips with the young wizard. Harry faces some really traumatic revelations about his past as the story unfolds leading to many different and powerful emotions. The good news is that the actor tackles them head on and gives his most authentic portrayal of the boy who lived yet.

Joining our three leads is the tremendous supporting cast, which again reads as a who’s who in British acting circles. While most of these roles are fleeting appearances from already established characters, such as Julie Walters and Mark Williams as Mr & Mrs Weasley, Robert Hardy as Cornelius Fudge and Richard Griffiths and Fiona Shaw as Uncle Vernon and Aunt Petunia, they show they level of commitment to the stories shown by all of the actors. Even the bigger names like Robbie Coltrane as Hagrid, Alan Rickman as Professor Snape and Maggie Smith as Professor McGonagall take a backseat to the three leads and the new characters.

Both Gary Oldman and David Thewlis bring their substantial talents to the franchise and provide standout performances. Thewlis brings so much to the Professor Lupin, the new teacher of the Defence Against the Dark Arts as he becomes a mentor for Harry, all the while struggling with his own dark secret. Gary Oldman is also exceptional as Sirius Black. Even though the character doesn’t have much screen time, he comes into his own during the climatic moments of the film with Oldman portraying the man with such honesty and vigour. While the character might not be new the actor certainly is, Michael Gambon does a good job at putting his own spin on Professor Dumbledore. He doesn’t quite have the presence of the late great Richard Harris but he is a more than able replacement for the legendary actor.

Chris Columbus did a great job with the first two movies in the series but director Alfonso Cuarón moves the franchise to a whole new level. Cinematographer Michael Seresin and Cuarón combine to bring you the most magnificent looking spectacle that is the Potter universe. They really open up the sheer grandeur of Hogwarts and its surrounding grounds with some truly astounding sets and brilliantly chosen locations. Combine this with some of the best effects seen in the Potter films, such as Buckbeak the Hippogryff and the relentless Dementors, you have one of the most visual fantasy films ever to grace the silver screen. What Cuarón also brings to the table is a complete understanding of actors and performance and this is how he gets the best out of the three leads and the rest of the brilliant ensemble.

The Harry Potter movies set the standard when it comes to family entertainment and The Prisoner of Azkaban continues that tradition. What they have going for them is a plotline that treats audience of all ages with the same level of intelligence and never panders to one demographic. This makes the picture instantly accessible to all, making you wish that all family entertainment could be this good.

Today, I went with my two daughters, a friend of one daughter and that friend's mother to see the film. My eldest daughter and I felt it was the best Potter yet. The other three liked it, but not as their favorite.

It has been quite a while since I read the book, but I did think this veered from the novel more than the others. Yet, I really like Alphonso Cuarón and his work, at least what I've seen (Y tu Mama Tambien and A Little Princess). Although one of those is NC-17 and the other is a gem of a kid's movie, he just knows how to build characters and I thought the main characters did their best work yet. Also, the special effects were, imo, outstanding, from the hippogryph (probably way off on the spelling) to the demontors.

So, even if I was outvoted and even if this appeared to stray most from the novel, I thought, as a movie, this was the best of them all. Great cast, very cohesive, trimmed to a bit over two hours, and fantastic visuals.

          The darkest Potter yet.

My wife and son saw it last night. :5: They loved it. They were sad when it was over - because they didn't want it to end. Definetly gonna add it to the DVD list.

We did get to the drive in on saturday and both my wife and I really enjoyed the movie. Its very different in style from the frist two and seems to fly though the story at an incredible pace. They no longer tried to include every minute detail from the book but only the bare minimum facts that they needed to keep the story moving...which was good but it leaves you wanting more when it ends as you know there's so much more to tell. The acting is once again first rate from the stellar supporting cast and the kids are better actors now which pays off with them doing longer scenes which again helps with the pacing. There's been a lot of talk about the new director and how much better he is the columbus but I don't think its all his fault given what he had to work with and the tight reigns the studio would have put on him...that said the new look is wonderfully dark and better suits the mood of the books.
The new actor for Dumbledore wasn't too bad and I think as the other books play out his take on the role will grow on us as he starts to get more mischievous.

All in all I'd give it a solid 4/5 and it could have been higher if it was 20 mintues longer to flush out some of the background details that I felt were lacking.

Andrew, you summed it up perfectly.

Since we've got this thread running, I'm not going to do a separate review post.

The kids are growing, not only physically but as actors as well which gives a new depth and resonance to their performances. I think we'll look back one day and recognize how unique this opportunity is to watch a group of young, talented actors/actresses progress through an extended series of films. All three of our heroes are dealing with the angst of their early teenage years, which director Alfonso Cuaron depicted well. Hermoine (Emma Watson) is REALLY beginning to show some skills. I like the new Dumbledore (Michael Gambon)! He's a bit more rounded and active in his role as headmaster. No disrespect to Richard Harris, but this incarnation IMO is truer to the character in the books. Gary Oldman is a treat as Sirius Black. It's too bad that WARNING: Major Spoiler From Book 5!!! Do NOT read this if you haven't already read Book 5!!! his character is killed off in Book 5. He brings a great deal of depth to his role, and a touch of welcome craziness, too.

This is the longest of the 5 books, but wound up being the shortest film. Lot's of things were omitted entirely or glossed over. The meaning of the references to Padfoot, Prongs, Mooney and Wormtail needs to have been explained as it is essential to storylines to come. Also, the handling of Harry getting his new Firebolt broom was horrible. I'm just going to leave it at that - the next film will need to cover some ground that SHOULD have been gone over here.

I will say that the CGI was - in spots - stunningly, jaw-droppingly well done. The hippogryph especially. I was absolutely spell-bound during the scene where it's skimming across the surface of the lake. The rest of the CGI is just a more mundane "excellent", with the weakest being the werewolf. Image detail and color were both impressive. Overall, visually this is the best of the three Potter movies - and that's saying something!

Audio was true to form in that it also is top notch. Good use of the surround channels. Good bass. Very good use for mood setting.

While it's the least true to the book, this is the best of the three movies overall. Yessir, a good :4: out of :5: as Andrew said! C'mon Goblet Of Fire!!!!

                    David -

Since I saw the movie today, assumed I was safe to read your major spoiler. Haven't read the books. Please next time, note that it is a spoiler for a FUTURE movie.

Liked this quite a bit, more than the first 2. My wife agrees with your second paragraph rather stronlgy regarding your other blacked out bits.

Do have to say, was expecting it to be a litle darker from people's posts. Might let my kid see it when it comes out on disk, he likes skeletons and ghosts more than is probably normal and won't mind the dementors a bit. Probably want one.

Saw it yesterday with the family, nice Sunday Matinee Sure is a shocker coming out of a dark, air conditioned theatre at 4pm to the bright, sunny and hot outdoors

Anyhoo... I quite enjoyed this one, the young actors are starting to their chops and the older ones that were added to this film, as mentioned, added their own great performances. I also felt though the pacing was quite quick/good, that we've become accustomed to a little more detail in the previous two versions that seemed to be rushed over. Though this film didn't have any of the sections that tended to linger in the other two so I guess that's the tradeoff, better pacing, less detail. You can decide which you prefer.

Again great CGI and audio (to be expected) I was a little dissapointed in the theatre's grainy representation though  I guess we get spoiled with our fancy HT's.... :B I think I'll reserve judgement on the picture until I see it at home on DVD though...
