What is a "Sleeper Hit"?

You see the term "Sleeper" referred to some movies. I was just curious as to the definition.

Pirates is being referred to as a "sleeper hit".


Is it a movie that beats the odds?

I agree with your definition, although I wouldn't put Pirates in that category, in that it was a big studio production with ample advertising. Something that comes out of the blue and becomes a hit, like My Big Fat Greek Wedding, would fit what I consider a sleeper hit more.

Welllllll, you could kind of loosely put Pirates in there. Many (including myself, and I work for the mouse) looked at the promos for Pirates and said "good luck - up against X2, Matrix II, T3, Hulk, TombRaider 2, etc., ain't gonna do too well".

Hmmmm. I was exactly wrong. So I wouldn't say sleeper is a total stretch.

That's exactly it. Usually something that slips by the critics' notice or review that suddenly becomes a big hit through word of mouth. Remember "Blair Witch Project"?
