Pirates Of The Caribbean - A Review

Pirates Of The Caribbean: The Curse Of The Black Pearl - A Review 07/21/2003

Yo ho ho, and a bottle of fun - you betcha! Directed by Gore Verbinski (Mouse Hunt, The Mexican, The Ring) and starring
    1. Johnny Depp (Edward Scissorhands, What's Eating Gilbert Grape, Sleepy Hollow) as Jack Sparrow
Geoffrey Rush (Shine, Shakespear In Love, The Tailor Of Panama) as Barbossa
Orlando Bloom (Blackhawk Down, Lord Of The Rings, Lord Of The Rings: The Two Towers) as Will Turner
Keira Knightley (Bend It Like Beckham, Pure) as Elizabeth Swan
Jack Davenport (Fierce Creatures, The Talented Mr. Ripley) as Commodore Norrington
Jonathon Pryce (Brazil, Ronin, Stigmata) as Governor Swann
this is a fine, fun, rollicking pirate movie. Master producer Jerry Bruckheimer teams with Touchstone Films and Disney to bring us this summertime blockbuster. When evil Captain Barbossa steals away the beautiful Elizabeth in order to use her blood to break a horrible curse that he and his crew of marauders sail under, it's up to Will and Jack to try and save her and defeat the un-killable, bloodthirsty band of pirates.

Johnny Depp puts in another memorable, quirky, funny performance as Capt. Jack Swan. This young actor has the ability to leave me smiling no matter what role he is cast in. His interpretation of a "scoundrel" and pirate is deft and immensely enjoyable, especially when played against the other fine performances of Orlando Bloom, Keira Knightley (does she remind anyone else of Heather Graham?) and especially Geoffrey Rush's portrayal of Barbossa, the pirate gang leader who had earlier betrayed Jack, took his crew and left him marooned on an island to die.

Visually, this is a beautiful film. Colors are vibrant and full, with scenes ranging from beautiful Carribean daylight vistas, to dark shadow-filled grottos, to a couple of well done underwater shots. There are some stunningly good CGI moments - thanks ILM and Gray Matter FX, and some very nice ship-to-ship battle scenes. Overall this is a high-quality visual feast and should be a marvelous demo-quality DVD (we can only hope)!

Sonically, nothing disappoints. Excellent fidelity, clear dialog and good deep bass at times helps you to immerse yourself in the story. I can't really comment on the surround-channel activity at this time as the theater I was viewing this in had the surrounds turned well down under normal listening levels. I'll be going back for a second viewing (yes, my wife liked this film that much!) and will try another theater in hopes of better performance. More on the surrounds at that time. . . .

Overall, this is a superior summer-time-fun film. No, it's not Citizen Kane, nor did it try to be. The acting is wonderful, over-the-top at times and down-right fun! The script moves right along, not seeming like a 2-hour and 13-minute film. You cheer with the good guys, you hiss at the bad guys and root for the boy to get the girl. The visuals are grand, the sword-fights are skillfully done, and the humor is well thought out and does keep you smiling. What more can you ask for? If you haven't yet seen Pirates Of The Caribbean hustle yourself to the theater before it's gone.

    I give Pirates:4: out of :5:.

I watched this movie last weekend with Allison. I definately give it :T :T

Thanks David for the detailed review. But I try not to read them till I go see the movie.

You are right on the money about the audio/video quality. As I was walking out I was telling Allison "I can't wait till I get the DVD". The FX are top notch. Jaw dropping in my opinion. The cgi blending with live action is amazing. Fortunate for me we watched it at a new theatre with Dolby Digital sound. The rear surrounds are very active with wild life, people talking, water slapping on the boats and much much more.

Here's my 11 year old daughter's review: "Dad, you're going to buy it when it comes out on DVD!" Actually, she went into quite a long stretch of detail (did you ever notice that kids have a huge desire to reveal spoilers), but, basically, she said I'm going to love Johnny Depp's performance and that she enjoyed the movie more than any other this summer, with the one exception of some story about a father fish in search of his kid fish in the ocean. Yeah, right, as if they could make a good movie about something like that.

              Arrrr-Bee-Darrrrrrr!

She be a fine vessel of a movie. If you haven't seen it yet you owe it to yourself to get out to this movie. One reason more than any other is Johnny Depp! To bad these kind of movies don't garner any awards because in my opinion Depp has brought to life the funniest, quirkiest, most intriguing character I've seen in a while. My wife and I were dying from laughter. I could have watched Depp for another hour. Actually the whole cast is enjoyable although the only annoying thing was the women pirate they added in. She was distracting and completely unnecessary...It was obviously a PC maneuver  but it's a minor gripe because didn't ruin the movie or anything. I just wish they had left her out because she added NOTHING IMO.

Sonically and visually this one is a treat! David summed it all up.

The FX's are fantastic, the ghost of Ray Harryhausen is alive and well and apparently working at Disney kudos for the seemless effects :T and also a big THANKYOU to the decision-makers to forgo a long drawn out title sequence (ala Spiderman).... "Pirates Of the Caribbean the Curse of the Black Pearl and then bam...into the movie.

You know it's a good movie when my wife says "We HAVE to get that one on DVD" (she rarely says that so arty: )

I enjoyed this soooo much I may actually give The Haunted Mansion a try when it comes out.

In an interview somewhere, Depp said he modeled his pirate character on Keith Richards of The Rolling Stones. Now that sounds interesting.

Actually, in another interview, he added that it was modelled on Keith Richards and Pepe LePew.

Finally saw this at a free company screening in our parking lot (full 35mm setup and killer sound system). Liked it very much. They do this once a year with one of our big releases, call it a "walk-in theater", with blankets, beach chairs, free popcorn, and In-n-Out burger kiosk.

Our AV guys have subwoofers that were shaking an outdoor parking lot. I now have some inadequacy issues. "Sure I have extension, but my volume!"

We also got to see some stuff on company work in progress, as well as the new Salvador Dali-Disney animated short 'Destino' that was concepted and developed 50 years ago and just finally produced and is making the rounds of the various film festivals. Pretty cool.

DVD in November. Hope Haunted Mansion continues the level of enjoyment.

                  BB

Okay...so it's based on a theme ride (loosely).
It does seem to have a competent cast. I'm not sure. What do you all think. We haven't had a pirate movie since, what, CutThroat Island???

                    I didn't say a good pirate movie...I just said a pirate movie

A weekend alone with my 11 year old son, coupled with crappy weather, led to a big movie-going weekend last weekend. He loved Cars 3, Pirates 5 and the 5th robot movie.

Cars 3--better than 2 and well worth the viewing if you're a fan of the first one. Gets back to McQueen as the central...

My favourite bass player Jack Bruce died yesterday aged 71. A very sad day. Jack was best known for his work with Cream in the 1960s.

Jack The Ripper, that is... in FROM HELL. Stars Johnny Depp as the Inspector who solves the identity of Jack The Ripper, and Heather Thomas who plays an intended Ripper victim. This is another take on the identity of The Ripper, and based on some known actuall facts, it is certainly plausible that there...

I picked up this gem because of a glowing review in...I think it was spin magazine, it's "Jack Bruce; Cities of the Heart" on CMP records.
Having grown up listening to Cream, West-Bruce and Lang, and other works of his that don't come to mind right now, I thought I knew what to expect....
