Preview Of The Hulk - No Spoilers

Looky, looky! Just brought up the TIVO and guess what was flashing at me? A preview of the upcoming movie The Hulk. I like Eric Bana A LOT - he was one of the nice surprises in Black Hawk Down. He plays Bruce Banner who, under stress, becomes the Hulk after a gamma ray radiation accident. Wow, they've lined up a few "names" for this film. Jennifer Connelly, Sam Elliot, Nick Nolte and a cameo by Lou Ferrigno (the original Hulk).

Some of the CGI shots of the Hulk look good, and some definitely don't. Well, it DOES appear that there'll be lots of action with tanks, attack choppers, fighter jets and the Hulk raising all kinds of mayhem. Hopefully, the funky CGI shots will look less funky in the actual movie.

    Here's hoping. . . .

I don't think this is a spoiler at all but I'm going to CMA anyway.
Word on the street is that "The Hulk" only makes about 4 or 5 appearances....has about 15 mins of actual screen time and doesn't appear until about the 40 minute mark.

This movie is apparantly very heavy on plot and story and is really about Banners inner struggles. That makes me very interested in this movie. It is not the action hoo-rah that the trailers would suggest.

Stan "the man" Lee signed off on the story so I say they can run with it.

It won't have the sarcasm and "fun" of Spiderman, Blade...etc... This movie is more drama than action.

I don't know if that takes the wind out of anyones sails but I'm more and more interested because the trailers actually were turning me off.

Gordon, it doesn't slow me down. Actually, with these cast members, NOT having too much action will probably be a plus as it'll give them more screen time. Considering the not-too-slick CGI I noticed in parts, having less "hulkiness" would also be a plus. I'm gonna check it out, regardless.

Good point Goose! Ang Lee has done a couple of other movies I enjoy - Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Ride With The Devil.

I'll agree with the CGI criticism from the ads I've seen so far. Flying for thousands and thousands of feet before landing? That seems to be a little too spectacular of a jump. I had the exact same issues with Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Too flashy on action.

On the other hand, I VERY VERY VERY much appreciate a good story being told, so lots of plot doesn't bother me unless it drags on.

That's exactly how the Hulk gets around in the comic book. Leaves an untidy trail of craters ever few miles everywhere he goes.

I just got back from watching the Hulk!

I really thought that the CGI was going to be so bad, that it would destroy the movie for me. It really fit in very well. The Hulk had a tendency to grow larger as he got more angry! Man, was it fun to watch. The CGI was pretty good. It seemed pretty seamless.

They did develope the characters for the first 40 to 45 minutes before we got to see the big green guy. My boys were getting antsy waiting for the him to appear. They really did a good job developing Bruce, his father, the General who chased him and his had been girlfriend, Peggy.

The action scenes did not take away from the movie, it helped the movie progress. The final Hulk battling scene did seem a little over the top. I wish that they had more time to develope that character. He was pretty awesome.

All and all, me and my boys really enjoyed it. I thought that it might have been too scary for them, but it was not.

Was the hulk everything I hoped for and more....no.

It was....okay, and that's the best I can say. It seemed like an unfinished work of art that had the potential to be so much more. The final conflict and resolution had a very " tacked on feel " to it. Nolte by far outshines everyone else, and Bana was not the best choice to play Banner.

How was the big green guy? Okay. He never suspended my disbelief. Was it necessarily a bad thing? no. I think that, maybe, they should have waited another 5 years...unfortunately...comicbook movies are a hot commodity right now. I can't help but wonder what WETA could have done with him.

The movie didn't seem to know what it wanted to be and that indecision got in the way. It had nothing to do with Eastern influence versus Western. It was this big disharmony of visuals and story that did more harm than good.

The soundtrack was surprising for Elfman and finally was something different. It wasn't easily identifiable as his work...and for that I applaud him.

THe guys who did the digital work on Hulk were top notch too. From what I've heard, the problem was more the director's background. Ang Lee has not done films with any large amount of CGI before, and was pretty new to it. So when they would show him stuff, he tended to be wowed and give his buyoff straight away, rather than really picking at it and pushing the envelope.

Note, I do agree Gollum is the the best creation of a CGI character to date, though.

Well, I just saw the movie, (right after T3 as a matter of fact) and was somewhat disappointed. As others have said, LOTS of plot. I usually enjoy a well developed, focused plot. However, in this case, I felt it was dragged out a bit too much and done too slowly, and it lost some of the feel. Ending part was a little strange with the frozen under the lake thing.

But CGI pretty darn good, and overall a decent movie. I appreciated that they made a concerted effort to make the movie in a comic-book style, with imbedded frames, showing different characters simultaneously from different camera aspects. Innovative, and cool. It didn't always work for a movie, but all the same.
