As part of the new features on the BB, I want to create a list of the top 25 movies (movies, not DVD's) for HTGuide members. By "top" I mean the movies that affected you the most when you saw them, that have you coming back again and again. The list will be alphabetized and NOT in a "best first" order. If there's enough energy and suggestions, I'll break it into genres - like sci-fi, western, etc. List yours here and I'll put together a comprehensive list and "stick" it to the top of the thread list. You want to be there…a very human film

3. Contact
Science vs. spirituality hasn’t been done better

4. Schlindler’s List
No comment should be necessary for this one

5. Pulp Fiction
The perfect dialog movie…stands up to multiple viewings very well

6. The Shawshank Redemption
A happy ending that isn’t at all sappy

7. Field Of Dreams
The father-son relationship theme done best

8. Dances With Wolves
If only for the end scene where Dunbar’s Indian friend (Wind In His Hair?) yells goodbye

9. Unforgiven
The pace. Slow and unassuming (like the character) until he has a drink…then BOOM! All hell breaks loose in a matter of seconds.

10. Glory
Bravery on film

11. The Matrix
The next Star Wars…a very deep film upon subsequent viewings

12. The Silence Of The Lambs
Scary done smart

13. Casablanca
Almost a cliché because it's on many lists but it’s just so damn well rounded

14. High Fidelity
The best depiction of a guys POV on dating (great supporting cast too)

15. The Hunt For Red October
Fiction that comes across as reality...that's praise in and of itself

16. Unbreakable
The best superhero film I’ve ever seen…a reality twist on the genre

17. Three Kings
A morality play that is funny and interesting instead of being pretentious

18. Shakespeare In Love
A recent Maxim article claims this a chick-flick…I guess I’m a chick. This is a smart and very funny film.

19. 12 Monkeys
Gilliam is a genius…great look and presentation…Brad Pitt is great.

20. Being John Malkovich
Odd and funny and odd some more.

21. Chasing Amy
A different kind of love story…the end is purpose built to piss you off

22. Jerry Magwire
Renee Zellweger is reason enough!

23. Fight Club
t’s just too cool…plus it uses a Pixies song as the main theme

24. Out of Sight
Pulp Fiction-ish but not so much that it doesn’t stand on its own

25. Raiders Of The Lost Ark
Great interesting plot with the most fun action scenes ever

I wanted to include the Lord of The Rings films but I just feel they can't be measured individually. It's almost a single film that spans three separate release dates.

Just out of curiosity...I wondered who appears in these films the most...to see if there are any common threads through my favorites. This is just off the top of my head so I might be missing a few:

The Devil's Advocate:
I just really like Pacino in this one...he's the devil no 2 ways about that...he has great fun with it.

The Usual Suspects:
You're left thinking: What The Hell?

Jacob's Ladder
Probably not a popular choice...but you did say movies that affected you...this one did in a very positive light...great after movie conversation

The Pledge
Loved it, loved it, loved it...Nicholson at his very best...disturbing subject matter...fantastic film

The title itself is slightly recursive...I think...though I may be wrong...I rarely use recursive functions...fun movie the original outshines II and III

The Baseball flick... classic lines

Aliens
Non-Stop Action...very different from the original which is why they both work

Alien
A much different movie than the sequel ,,,much more internal....darker I thought...but great sci-fi

Raiders of the Lost Ark
Classic Adventure..original and yet a nod to the original adventurers/swashbucklers

Star Wars (when it was called just Star Wars )
The Original...can't top it

Empire Strikes Back
Oooo the Empire is nasty..."I am your father"...good setup...stands on it's own

Blade Runner
Everything else set-wise is just a nod to Blade Runner...ex Episode II has a chase scene through a bladerunner-esq city ...you can't top BladeRunner's style it was first


Who could forget, the always watchable:
Jurassic Park
CGI Effects would never be the same...great popcorn/sci-fi

Like it or hate it...there is no in-between with this movie...I for one loved it

Works on several levels...Philosophical...Spiritual....Balls on Action

Close Encounter of the Thrid Kind
First time I saw it...I didn't like it but I wanted a bendy toy...now I really enjoy it for more what it was meant to be (about an inward journey..a longing to belong) rather than this special effects thing..it unfortunate the the Definitive Version will never see the Silver Screen

1 2001: A Space Odyssey
I've seen this movie more times than any other film -- and most of those times were in commercial theaters ! A timeless classic that changed the course of movie making.
2 A Man For All Seasons
Poignant, though provoking story, very well acted and beautifully photographed
3 Aliens
Best sci-fi adventure / critter movie ever
4 Amadeus
Witty, well acted, and the music isn’t too bad, either :>)
5 As Good As It Gets
If the dialog were any more clever, you'd think they were in a movie. :>) Kudos to the actors for making it seem real.
6 Casablanca
Classy, classic. Most moving rendition of any national anthem I've ever seen.
7 Dirty Rotten Scoundrels
Gives being "bad" a good name -- lots of fun
8 In the Heat of the Night
Though not a documentary, documents the feel of a period that we should not forget lest it be repeated -- and an interesting murder mystery too
9 Jaws
From the opening notes to the rousing conclusion, this wild ride is so well done it would be easy to overlook any structural flaws and logic lapses -- if there were any :>)
10 Lawrence of Arabia
May well be the best movie ever made -- I saw this one several times in commercial theaters and have enjoyed it at home on tape, LD and DVD -- it has continued to grab my attention and carry me time after time through its dramatic, epic story of an interesting, idiosyncratic individual who rises to the occasion during war
11 Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring (Director's Cut)
I've probably spent more time in the past 12 months watching this movie than for the next five "most watched" during that time combined. Of course given it’s length, that is easy to do -- and it is so good it is easy to watch it that much, even if it does makea few "adjustments" to the story (read the book to find out what those are)
12 Mississippi Burning
Important message delivered in very human terms. Some of the most effective "environmental" surround sound effects on DVD
13 My Fair Lady
A lot of fun to watch the characters develop as they sing their way through some all-time classic tunes... there will never be another actress quite as classy as Audrey Hepburn
14 Nixon
Best of Oliver Stone's polemics -- although the Nixon family says it is inaccurate, it makes a compelling dramatic case
15 Outland
I really like Connery's outer space sheriff even more than his Bond portrayals & the company doctor makes a perfect counterpoint -- too bad the DVD was an early half-assed non-anamorphic release with shimmering edge "enhancement"
16 Porky's II
Not just a "horny teenager movie" -- has a serious message for racial harmony and acceptance of individuals which transcends its "gross out" roots
17 Raiders Of The Lost Ark
Finally saw this in a commercial theater for the first time just last year -- but not the first time I'd ever viewed this incredibly paced adventure (wore out a Beta tape, VHS & LD I have, when-oh-when do we get a DVD???) -- exciting and intriguing all the way through
18 Shakespeare in Love
Movie making at its best -- intelligent witty script, gorgeous sets and costumes, first rate acting (including two Oscar winning performances) and effective sound effects and music
19 Spirited Away
This one absolutely "spirited me away" when I saw it in its limited release last fall -- one viewing was enough to displace dozens of other movies I've enjoyed for years -- this one is a winner -- and not just because the Academy gave it a deserved Oscar! A dream world worth re-visiting...
20 Stand By Me
Says a lot about friendship under adversity in a touching before-coming-of-age story -- you might not even guess it was based on a Stephen King story -- it is more dramatic than "scary"
21 The Fifth Element
May not be the "best" sci-fi adventure ever, but if "most watched" is our selection criterion here, this one is near the top of the list (and no apologies for that -- it is a well made flick, fun to watch)
22 The Godfather
Easily in the running for "best movie ever made" and another one that is actually easy to watch again and again -- one can almost forget it is a "gangster" movie; it has much heavier impact
23 The Loved One
"Something to offend everyone" they said, and some of the most wickedly funny scenes committed to celluloid
24 The Matrix
Beyond the hype, there's the movie itself -- the soundtrack alone is worth the price of admission but there's a lot of other stuff going on here besides the LFE channel :>) -- spawned a lot of imitators, but this is "the one" :>)
25 The Producers
One of the funniest comedies on film (and now a version, which I have NOT seen, has taken Broadway by storm) -- takes a simple accounting mistake and turns it into a major exercise in "bad taste" that has to be seen to be believed. :>)

Honorable Mentions:
Road To Perdition -- Best Cinematography -- ever. Painterly perfection with every shot, employing the compositional balance and chiaroscuro of the Old Masters.
Minority Report - an "instant classic", but too early to know if I'll keep coming back to it -- the "eyeball" scene kind of grosses me out, but otherwise it is a treat to watch many times through
Young Frankenstein -- more memorable lines and hilarious sight gags than virtually any other flick -- it's probably a better movie than at least a few that "made the list" but the line had to be drawn somewhere and I just couldn't put a second Mel Brooks film on the list when nothing by Ingmar Bergman is on there (probably at least Smiles of a Summer Night, The Magician, Wild Strawberries and The Seventh Seal should all go on it, but then, what to take off?)
Shrek -- An adult movie about kiddie fairy tale characters, and it's a cartoon? Yeah, it works, and it's damned funny.
The Empire Strikes Back -- Sure, I was excited by the original Star Wars when I saw it in the commercial theater during its initial run, but the sequel was actually a better movie, and frankly, I'm kind of bored with the whole series after the way Lucas has jacked around with the originals and made such travesties of the "prequels" (especially the shamelessly exploitative Ep I: The Phenomenal Mistake), I try to recall the magic of that first viewing, but it just doesn't come back the way it does when re-screening some of my real favorties

And a Pending "Favorite":
Lord of the Rings: Return of the King -- it can’t be a favorite until I've actually seen it… :>) but it probably will be...

George, a lot of the films on your list were on mine before I paired it down. Especially the Westerns. I also had Lonesome Dove, The Ox-Bow Incident and Once Upon a Time in The West in addition to several of your John Wayne movies

And movies I love like the Marx Brothers, To Be or Not to Be, the Bond movies, Pink Panthers, The Producers, etc. keep on popping up in my brain.

1,2,3. Star Wars IV, V, VI - I was still in school at an impressionable age when these came out and WOW. The fact that I have Jedi Master Yoda on my living room wall and 7' cardboard cutout of Darth Vader probably says it all.

4, 5. LOTR: Fellowship of the Ring/Two Towers - My favorite book of all time has translated into some of my favorite films of all time. Thanks for doing it justice Peter Jackson.

Watch them together some time and you'll get the joke. They use a lot of the same sequences. Take the boxing out of Snatch and it's really just Lock, Stock. Guy Richie isn't the most original writer/director on the planet.

David, I have to agree on that. Even though both "Aliens" and "The Fifth Element" made my "Fave 25" list, there is no contest as to which is the better movie.

While "The Fifth Element" is fun to watch and has some demo-quality scenes on a technical level which guarantee that at least parts of it WILL be watched rather often, "Aliens" works at multiple levels and has story concept, "atmosphere", dialog, character development, acting, sets, costumes, sound effects, plot twists, special effects, musical score, and did I mention acting? :>) that set it far above most sci fi movies -- heck -- most movies of any kind, and certainly superior in virtually all categories to "The Fifth Element" (except perhaps "visible female pulchritude", :>) although sometimes "slightly covered" is actually more tantalizing than "fully exposed").

"The Fifth Element" is more of a high class "guilty pleasure" than a "great movie". But there is still room on MY list for both kinds of movie. :>)
