    Top 100 Movies List

So this is the spinoff from another thread, I saw this list on artofmanliness.com and it seemed to have a lot of great classics on it. I'd printed it a long time ago swearing I would watch them all (I've only seen about 20-30 of them), and found the printout while digging through some old stuff. So decided to get it going again and start over from scratch, and watch them all (whether I'd seen them or not). So this thread will be an ongoing discussion of these movies, if you participate make sure to use spoiler tags where appropriate!! Also it's understood that there's probably tons of great movies not on the list, but I figure it's a good list to go off of!

I'll update the list with a * and the date I watched it. I own lots of the "obvious" ones so I'll probably go through those first.

So first I knocked off Apollo 13, then The Iron Giant, and The Bourne (complete series). I'll try to run a marathon of the full set of any multi part movie.

So Apollo 13 has always been one of my all time favorites. I've about worn out the DVD over the years and got the bluray and can say the sound alone was worth the upgrade. Great flick, and very true and correct from the nasa side of things. You can actually pull up the mission audio from the real mission and a lot of the dialog is identical. One funny thing I noticed from the special features, The scene where Jim Lovell's wife is in the shower and accidentally drops her ring down the drain: Apparently Ron Howard got drilled by several critics for making that up and making it a totally obvious "ominous" plot thing, but they have Jim Lovell's real wife in the special features saying that it really happened!. So anyways if you like anything space related this is great. Tom Hanks and Ed Harris both did a particularly good job.

    -----------

The Bourne series to me is one of the no brainers in the list (especially of "manly" movies). This is the series that sold me Matt Damon as a legit badass. It's also nice to see a main character's love interest actually die off in the middle of a series. To me that shows real thinking in the plot and realism in a genre that tends to get very unrealistic.

    ------------------

The Iron Giant is a non CGI animated flick, one of the classic themes of teaching a machine to care and have feelings. Definitely a "manly" movie in the sense of a kid having a giant pet robot . I especially love the scene where the robot thinks the army killed the kid and goes berserk. he's so clumsy throughout the movie and looks harmless, then starts busting out crazy looking laser weapons from every crevice a la some alien meets terminator meets war of the worlds. Great, classic story and a good one to show kids as well. Pixar is great stuff but this is awesome for a good old fashioned non-cgi animated flick every now and then.

So I was at Fry's the other day looking for some old movies. I found this great list of (mostly) older movies and was looking for a few at Fry's when I saw a whole section labeled "Criterion". They appear to be high quality versions of older movies. Does anyone have experience with them?...

The Bourne Identity - a review
      by Patrick Sun
I thought "The Bourne Identity" was okay, not as good as I'd hoped, but not horrible, just didn't have enough bite to it. Matt Damon is okay as Jason Bourne. I found Franka Potente endearing in her role. Bourne is definitely a badass, even if it's just reflex kicking in when he needs the moves....

      Red Dawn (2012)

Nah, didn't like it. This turned out to be just one more of SO MANY movie re-makes that I thought were unnecessary and so-so. Not like the original was a masterpiece or anything, but its time period, setting, story, and the way it was done evoked an emotional connection to the story back then. This...
