Movie ticket prices on the rise again

Here's a rant on ticket prices. On the weekend I found out that ticket prices went up again. Here's the various prices that I'm faced with in my area (in Canadian$)

    Regular theater:
    Full price: $11.00
    Weekend Matinee: $8.25
    Weekday Matinee: $7.00
    Tuesday all day: $7.00

SilverCity bigger screen and stadium seating:
    Full price: $13.50
    Weekend Matinee: $10.50
    Weekday Matinee: $8.50
    Tuesday all day: $8.50

So for a weekend matinee, I'm paying either $16.50 or $21.00 for my wife and I. If I go on a regular night, and I've only done that once in the past several years, I'm looking at $22 - $27!

I am in shock at the upper price range, and to some extent at the constant increase in prices. I guess I don't get out much. I can finally say that at the upper price range, it makes almost no sense in seeing a movie in the theaters, I can easily wait 6 months for the DVD to come out and enjoy the movie at home with friends.

There is now only one reason to go to the Silver City, and that is for DLP presentations. I guess I'm lucky in that way as there's only a handfull of theaters across North America that have DLP capability.

So I'll be catching the new Star Wars in full digital glory.

I hear you, Paul. But to be honest, I would gladly pay the ticket price if there was a decent cinema ( and not the multiplex garbage) in my neck of the woods. I long for the good ol' days when going to a theater was a visual experience long before the curtain parted and projector lit up the screen. That was when they had gorgeous lobbies, plush carpeting in both the mezzanine and the balcony, plus those red velvet curtains... ahhh, what atmosphere.

Exactly. The last film I saw was The Others and it was at the local multiplex. It was this cramped stadium seating thing. No draperies or carpeting, just concrete and wood. The speakers sounded tinny and there was light reflecting from the propjection booth onto an area of the screen. What a bummer.
