The ESSENTIAL Collection - Movie Favorites By Genre

    Hi all.

I want to create a list of the ESSENTIAL movies or series that we should have in the ultimate collection. By collection, I'm not limiting this to DVD's - any movie or series available whether it be just released, only on late-night TV, laserdisc, VHS, DVD, you name it - is up for consideration. Now, the list will change and grow as categories are added or refined - feel free to suggest new ones! - and new movies come out and replace older nominations. Each category can have only 3 films listed - I know, that's not enough but they're my marbles and I'll play like I want to. Plus, that should generate some conversations on which three are best.

Initially, I'll keep this all in an Excel spreadsheet which will be the master and update it as entries arrive. I'll also edit the next post after this one as the list viewable by the Forum. I'll have the final say on disagreements (if any arise). How's that sound?

I'll get the ball rolling, but I'd like EVERYONE to contribute movies, categories, misc. suggestions and whatever, okay? Let's play!

David, I'm not sure if I understand.... will this be a voting type thing? Whatever show gets the most votes type a thing?

I'd say for crime drama that "The Soprano's" is a good series but it's only on HBO.

I'm an HBO kinda guy and I could boost "Sex in the City" into one category but not sure which. It's suppose to be comedy but it ain't that funny to me, just an interesting show.

I believe both of those are available.

      Others to consider:

      The Last Don
      The Godfather Series
      Jurassic Park Series

Now, I suppose no need to list shows not available at this time. I believe some will be sooner or later.

Am I on the right track or am I confused?

        Sonnie,

It could evolve into a voting process, but for now I'd planned to go on comments from members like "oh yeah, that would be a good one" and get a consensus. The one thing I don't want is for it to turn it into a pi##g contest. That'd kill the fun and Lex'd win that anyway - he's the big pi##r around here.

I'm sure this one won't stay on the list for long, knowing the people on this forum, but hey, it's one of my top 3 favorite movies.

I think it'll be very hard to come up with a consensus. But here goes. Plus I've added a couple of other categories. I see you've broken down into additional categories. I'll add more than 3 in some categories as we should discuss each. That's the way to generate some traffic.

                    Comedy:
                    Sleepless in Seattle
                    When Harry Met Sally
South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut
                    Strictly Ballroom
                    The Princess Bride

                    Crime:

                    On the Streets:
                    The Usual Suspects
                    Ronin
                    LA Confidential

                    Courtroom:

                    The Mafia:
                    Goodfella's
                    Casino
                    Godfather trilogy

                    Drama:
                    Almost Famous
                    LA Confidential
                    Wall Street

                    Horror:
                    The Thing

                    Military:

                    Recent conflicts:
                    Black Hawk Down
                    Courage Under Fire

                    Vietnam:
                    Platoon
                    Apocalypse Now
                    Boys From Company C

                    Korea
                    Pork Chop Hill
                    MASH

                    WWII:
                    Patton
                    The Longest Day
                    Saving Private Ryan
                    Das Boot

                    WWI:
All's quiet on the Western Front
                    Sargent York

                    Sci Fi:

                    On Earth:
                    The Matrix
                    Fifth Element
                    Terminator series

                    Outer Space:
                    Empire Strikes Back
                    Aliens

                    Thrillers:
                    Alien
                    Se7en

                    Westerns

                    General:
                    Silverado

                    Cowboys vs Cowboys
                    Unforgiven

                    Comedy
                    Blazing Saddles

                    Animation:
                    A Bug's Life
Toy Story and Toy Story 2
                    Final Fantasy

                    Musicals:
                    Singin in the Rain
                    Moulin Rouge
South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut

                    Spy movies:
                    Jame's bond
                    Ronin

                    Fantasy:
                    Lord of the Rings
                    Excalibur

How about series, like Soprano's or James Bond? Are they counted as one title, or the series.

Maybe start off with a genre, and of course there will be movies that cut across genre's.

8O WOW! Thanks for all the input y'all! I was busy on a project all weekend and haven't had a chance to check things out forum-wise. I'll compile the results and get an updated listing out today.

One I am going to do: I think Paul's right about consensus not working, and as a result I'm going to use the "total times suggested" as the determining factor for which movies make the list. If there is a tie, I'll be the tie-breaker.

One thing I may do: Bump the title count from 3 to 4 per category. That'll give the list a little more variety.

                              OK David,

Here's some movies you missed IMO...

                              SCI FI:

Star Trek (At least the even ones)

                              Comedy:

It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World
                              Money Pit

                              Cop:

Bullit (for the car chase if nothing else)

                              Western:

                              Lonesome Dove (TV Mini Series)

                              Hope this helps

I'd be surprised if it did show up on many persons' lists. The inclusion of one JarJar Binks made it a cartoon/parody/marketing vehicle for Christmas toys - whatever you want to call it. Had that oafish character NOT been in the movie, it would have been much more enjoyable (and desirable).

As always, just my 2 cents, John.

Hi, I'm hoping this is not too far off topic for this forum...

Anybody know any good places to go on the web to find ratings of audio soundtracks for DVD movies? I can find lots of general movie ratings, but just not too much devoted to or featuring to the audio side of the picture....

Pulled another classic off the shelf last night. Hitchcock's only "straight comedy" (no murder, no mayhem), this stars the woman who defined "screwball comedienne"--Carole Lombard. Also starring Robert Montgomery, the story, style and comical moments are straight from the late 30s/early...

I have been a 'lurker' here for a while, and after getting a feel for the place, which BTW seems pretty friendly, and quite knowledgeable, thought i would register as I have something of an ongoing quest to finish my AV/HT journey which I started some 2 yrs ago, and would appreciate...

Great flick. 15 years after the first release, this movie is re-released on DVD in the "Vista Series", with an excellent DVD transfer and new special features.

This is a fantastic idea for a movie, mixing animation into real-world...

In a year of movie stinkers, I was very pleasantly surprised to come across this little gem by random. It's a satirical, silly little comedy about a professional hit man, from a family of contract killers, hired to kill an art thief but instead finds himself protecting her. They are joined by a quirky...
