What an unconventional love story, for a bit, I thought I was watching "Magnolia-lite" in the manner of how events of the past serve to land 2 people, unlikely to get together in a different time and place, in a strange relationship. Some of the plotline seems almost too "convenient" but I went with it.
Very good performances by Billy Bob Thornton, Halle Berry's performance was a little more uneven. I don't know if the director intended the bits of comedy that ensued with Peter Boyle has Thornton's character's father, but he sure got it with the audience I saw this film with.
I might be one of the very few here that is actually living in Georgia, and the crowd is definitely highly aware of the racial tensions that the film brought about in small doses. The racial scenes did get the audience a bit tense, but fortunately it's not the main thrust of the story, so the audience was spared.
I give it a grade of B or 3 stars.
