was at a friend's apartment the other day - a swanky Hoboken pad where neighbors include New York Giants like Eli Manning and Jeremy Shockey - and was marveling at the quality of the flatscreen HDTV. I was watching college football in HD and was absolutely floored by the quality. If you've ever seen HDTV you know what I'm talking about. Unfortunately for me, only neighbors of football players can afford an HDTV. But wouldn't it be cool to watch a movie like, say, SPIDER-MAN 2 in HD? How about watching SPIDER-MAN 2 in HD in a theater? How about watching SPIDER-MAN 2 in a theater in a resolution that is 4 times greater than HD? No it's not just Christmas wishes - it's actually happening. Sony is planning to debut it's new 4K digital project screening, which presents images at close to four times the resolution of a standard high definition TV, with an invitation-only screening of SPIDER-MAN 2. The screening will take place at the Hollywood Pacific Theater on January 13th with an hour-long panel discussion on Sony's Silicon X-tal Reflective Display (SXRD) before the film. Unfortunately lowly web writers like yours truly likely won't be invited as Sony hopes to entice exhibitors to embrace the new technology and use it in their theaters. But hopefully one day soon we'll be sitting in a theater watching SPIDER-MAN 3 in SXRD. Anyone planning to attend is encouraged to write in with their thoughts on the format and just how great the film looked.
