I was not able to use the EPROM update program despite my com ports working fine due to a conflict with Microsoft Activesync software used for Pocket PC's. The EPROM program gives the error message "failure to initialize com port".
the fix:
1. ctrl-alt-del
2. hit the "processes" tab
3. end the task "wcescomm.exe"
just reboot the computer after finishing the eprom and the activesync should work fine again
