A specialised Rotel forum seems to be the place to ask this... But it concerns an old piece of kit, so hopefully you guys have got good memories!
I've recently had a RSP-985 on my bench and noticed what might be a problem with the on-screen display. (I'm using the composite monitor out)
In a nutshell, when the unit is not doing anything, and after a function has been activated (source selected or volume changed) the green background will flash on and off before settling back to a steady green on-state. And it may do this continuously while the volume is being ramped up or down.
I should add that the OSD is always present whenever a menu function is selected (no flashing) and of course if video material is present from an external source. So there is no loss of functionality - it's just an annoyance really.
We sold these units around the turn of the century and back then CRT TV was the norm with plasma just starting to appear. I wonder if this is a PAL/NTC compatibility issue and my modern TFT display is trying to find / auto select an optimal resolution - hence the flashing?
Has anyone ever noticed this on their own 985 or any other older Rotel gear?
Oh, perhaps I should add that the unit was struck by lightning...so anything is possible. Fortunately the damage was not too severe, being limited to some vapourised pcb traces, a damaged LED (of all things!) and a shorted tantalum cap on the DSP module pulling down one of the regulated supply rails. Apart from this display issue, there is now nothing that doesn't work perfectly.
