Got a used 985 from an auction site. Looks perfect but had a hum on all inputs, all sources, on mute etc. If it was on, there was a hum. Also there was an audio 'hiccup'- like a 1/2 sec pause in sound every few minutes. My setup worked perfectly with an RTC965, nothing changed but swapping the 965 for the 985- all identical.
So I tried all different inputs, changing settings etc etc. Finally I unplugged everything else and just had RSP985 to my RB985 amp. Hum. So I replaced the DB25 cable with a spare I had. Hum. Then I replaced the db25 cable with RCA plugs - FIXED! Both the hum was gone and had on all day w/o 'hiccup'. So with this deduction it is 100% the DB25 output of the 985 that is bad (or something internal that 'comes through' on DB25 but not RCA), but either way- if you have hum, hiccups, or any other problem and are using the db25 cable- swap it out for RCAs as a first step. Posting this not only for forum users (looks like very few) but for owners web-searching for a solution like I did.
