    RSX-1056 Volume control issue

Strange problem that started happening in the past 6 months. The volume control on the front of my RSX-1056 seems to have a mind of it's own.

When I increase the volume it works correctly, and the numbers (dB) increase normally.

When I turn the knob counter clockwise to decrease the volume, the numbers (and volume) do not decrease.

Example: Volume is at -50 and I start turn the knob.. It might look like this--50..49..50..51..50..49..48..47..48..

If I turn it REAL slow I can eventually work it down to where I want it. When adjusting the volume on the remote control it works perfectly in both directions. Any thoughts?

Not sure about the technicalities behind this issue. But the same thing happened to my dads pioneer reciever like 8 years ago. He had to have to knob or the knobs circuit board replaced. They think it was caused by my little brothers sometimes playing with it and turning it extremely fast in both directions. Hope this helps.

Well, I like to think that I would have an answer to this question because I have a lot of experience with Rotel receivers but this one has got me stumped!!. I have for the life of me NEVER heard of an issue like this. I once had a remote control that had a mind of it's own and would decide to send the volume off to infinity when it felt like it, but your talking about the actual volume knob on the unit. Have you powered it down at the back via the main switch for awhile and re-started the unit?. If that does not work, contact Rotel and they might give you some insight as to what's going on there.

Just speculating, but if the remote control increments the volume properly, it sounds like the problem might be the rotary encoder ("digital potentiometer") itself. They are normally sealed, so I don't know if it can possibly be cleaned.

If that is in fact the problem, it could be a Rotel-only repair, as the part (ALPS EC16B243040F) is apparently discontinued. Also a control that is mounted on a PC board is sometimes only available as a complete board assembly.

It's not a component normally associated with a high failure rate but it has occurred now and then with the Rotel 10 series receivers and surround processors.

This is almost certainly a problem with either the rotary encoder or less likely with the micro controller reading the encoder.

I had to replace mine. The part is cheap.. if you can solder you can do it yourself.

Did you source the part from Rotel or did you find it in stock somewhere else, and what was the cost?

I had the EXACT same problem, but eventually the knob just stopped working altogether.

Please do provide part number/source - I have been unable to locate online. I do have a query out to Rotel and will update when I hear back.

                  Full response from Rotel:

                  ================================================== ===========

Thank you for contacting the Rotel Technical Support Department.

I am sorry to hear that you are having problems with your RSX-1056.

The Volume Encoder is still available.

The Part Number is "PT30026" and the cost is $2.14 each.

The shipping charge would be $5.00 via the USPS (delivery not guaranteed) or $10.00 via UPS (delivery guaranteed).

I want to insure that you understand that if you select shipping via the USPS, the delivery is not guaranteed and the Part/s is/are not guaranteed to arrive undamaged.

The USPS does not supply a Tracking Number so we have no way to find out where the package may be or if it was delivered.

Your only recourse would be to place another order; we could not reship the order at no charge.

Shipping via UPS would guarantee delivery and the Part/s would be guaranteed to arrive undamaged.

If you don't receive the order we would reship it to you, if the Part/s arrives damaged we would send you another Part/s once we receive the damaged Part/s back.

If you would like to place an order I will need a Credit Card number with the Expiration Date.

We accept Visa, Master Card, and American Express.

I have attached the Customers Parts Order Request Form for your convenience.

If you have the “Typewriter” option in your Adobe program you may complete the Parts Order Form electronically and e-mail it back to me or you can get a print out, fill in all the required fields, scan it and e-mail it back to me as an attachment.

Good that you got a reply from Rotel Tech Support.
Are you planning on repairing the unit yourself?

Once I have the part, I will open case and see how/where it fits and then decide. My soldering skills are rather crude, so unless it looks easy, I will take it to a local shop.

Has someone that has done it comment on the difficulty?
