Hmm brand new HDMI hook-up to a bluray?
If so, 48K would be fine.

    It's a sampling rate value.
Consider this: most CD's are done at a rate of around 44.1khz (Insert Musical band name here).
A lot of uncompressed Blurays sit at 48Khz (your Ironmans and Fifth Elements).
The creme de la creme of blurays have been encoded at 96khz (Dave Matthews, etc.)
It's not exactly a measure of fidelity or definition because there are other factors at work.

Try some research into both sampling rates and bit rates.
    cheers,
    L.
(I'm still researching the big picture myself)
