Depending on your speakers, the Pioneer Elite vsx84 is a fantastic receiver. It's also 1.2a Hdmi. it runs 6 and 8 ohm speakers very well but falls short when you have harder to drive 4 ohm load speakers. It loses dynamic range like most other receivers.

The Rotel has a better ability to support 4 ohm load speakers and still has some gas left. If you are not trying to get into HDMI switching and PCM over HDMI then no need to upgrade. Unless you want Ipod and Xm radio built in , there is no need to upgrade. Unless you want powered 2nd zone or 7.1 right off the receiver then there is no reason to upgrade.

The Pioneer is a feature machine. I personally like it alot. I also feel they sound better then most other receivers in it's price class including the Marantz models.

The Pio 84 is not current, the 94 is. These receivers have traditonally been able to drive 4 ohm speakers well, albeit not as well as the Rotel IMO. I assume that you want LPCM capability for blu ray or DVD-HD. In the end, you will likely want to get at least an outboard stereo amp to help whatever receiver you decide on. Rotel is behind the curve as usual in this situation with no audio HDMI capable receiver under $2K, which puts it in an incredible competive disadvantage.

Actually the Pioneer Elite 84 when setup with a 7.1 4ohm load speaker package(Lsi Polk) the receiver goes into protection mode. At reference levels.

Yes the 84 is last years model. It has been replaced by the awesome 94

I switched to the Marantz SR8001 from an RSX-1056 and the Toroidal power supply drives my Focal surrounds and center a bit better at higher volumes. The extras it comes with are a great value. The manual and AUdessey EQ is a great bonus in order to obtain a linear response in my listening space. The HDMI audio support which includes post processing of high rez PCM from Bluray and HD-DVD really makes use of my 7.1 set up. The headphone output lets me enjoy movies or music at night with dolby processing. The extra HDMI output will come in handy when I add a projector to my room and I can keep the Plasma for daytime use.

It works great with my Rotel RB-1070 running the mains and when using pure audio/direct on the Marantz I have lost nothing on two channel listening. I gave Rotel a chance with the 1057 (No HDMI audio, No headphone ) and the the 1058 (No post processing on PCM high rez flagged sources, NO headphone output, No Audessey EQ, No HDMI 1.2 for direct DSD SACD processing, all coming in $700 MORE EXPENSIVE than previous models). The Marantz brushed aluminum trim looks great paired with Rotel gear so the bling bling factor is sort of covered as well. The only thing the 1058 had in its favor was a scaler but it turned out to be max at 1080i - whats the point if Bluray and HDVD already output at 1080i or 1080p?

anyone else heard of this problem: on DTS tracks only, I've recently started hearing odd noises- clicks, pops, etc. At first I thought it was the disk (WOTW) but then did Shrek and a few others and same thing. Some even worse!

              Marantz DV9500 HDMI issues
              by marantzsr8500
              Hi,

Well, I decided to go with the Marantz DV 9500. Problem is, that it only has HDMI connection and the Marantz SR 8500 receiver does not have HDMI, but has DVI. I found an adaptor that converts HDMI Male to DVI Female.

Newbie picking up 1058 - What to look for?
              by skaymakca
I am picking up my first rotel product tomorrow, a 1058 and am very excited but nervous. All of the HDMI business is aggravating right now with mid-fi (?) companies, but I don't really want to wait any longer to upgrade from my cheap yamaha receiver running my B&W 600 series 5.1 system.

My television is a Sony KDF-50E2000 and I'm curious if I'll have any HDMI issues with a Marantz SR4002 connected to the TV and a PS3, Xbox 360 Elite, and Oppo 980 connected to the Marantz. I don't know if it's a big deal that my TV is not v1.3 or anything of that nature. Let me know if you need any...
