    Headphone amp connections

Just bought a Grado headphone amp and need a little advice on hook-up to my RSP-1068.
Excluding CD and Tuner audio-input, I have 4 other audio "inputs": TV, 2xDVD, and PC (for MP3).

Is the Zone 2 output to the Grado the best option to hear all 6 audio inputs? Is the Zone 2 output the same quality? Are there headphone options that I need to know more about? Should I use the 3 (only) audio analog outputs from the 1068 and get along without one of my input devices? Will the "tape" output work for a headphone amp? I'm looking for a superior sound quality to my 'cans' so it's important that I know how to get the best from my sources. I'd also like the best output with the least trouble in set-up and operation.

    Thanks,
    Roger

For most preamps, Tape output is the best way to feed a headphone amp. Tape output is fixed at the full level of the input signal. Zone 2 output is variable with the volume control on the 1068, not what you want when your headphone amp has its own volume control. (Even if the Zone 2 output is set to "fixed", the signal is still passing through a bunch of circuitry of the 1068, whereas the Tape output gets the signal straight off of relays.)

However, with the 1068, both the Tape and Zone 2 outputs only pass analog audio. They do not receive digitally processed audio. If your source components are connected through optical or coax digital, you'll need to also connect them to the 1068 with analog RCA cables to hear any output through Tape or Zone 2. In my opinion, this is a design flaw of the 1068, but it greatly simplifies the unit's relay switching for analog output.

      headphone output - noobie question
      by JonJeffman
      Hey,
Not sure if this is a dumb question or not, but if a piece of equipment doesn't advertise it as having a headphone amp, are all the headphone outputs the same (i.e. like a line out or something)?

I was looking at buying some Sennheiser HD650's and read that they really need...

headphone w/RSX-1055 (via tape-out or other?)
      by stevkar
I'm all set to put the money down and finally buy the Rotel RSX-1055... but the one thing I can't get over is not being able to attach headphone output. The set-up is in a multi-ourpose den, home-study, library, spare bedroom, etc. and have to be able to run silently with audio out to headphone somehow....

      Headphone amp for RSP-1098?
      by whmacs
      Hi All,
I'm contemplating getting a headphone amp for my RSP-1098 to improve two channel listening (I've got Jamo THX speakers which are great for movies, but not so good for music). I am tossing up between the MF XCAN v3 and the Creek OBH21SE. I've currently got a pair of Senn HD570 headphones,...

      Zone 2 question: RSP-1068/RMB-1077
      by rhubarbe
I am thinking about buying a Rotel RSP-1068/RMB-1077 combo, because I like the sound, respect the brand, and just as importantly, the price is right.

      The RMB-1077 is 7 channel and my setup is only five channel (3 x Polk lc265i and 2 x lc65i). I have a second zone (2 x Polk lc265i)...

1068 Component Input - Composite Zone 2 Output?
      by Stevebez
Is it possible to have component input to 1068, and have a composite output to zone 2? I.e. if ever you wanted to watch DVD in second Zone.

      Rgds Steve
