    RSP-1098 Bass Management

I am a new member, but have been looking without joining for quite sometime. I have most recently, past month, upgraded my system from a Yamaha DSP-A1 to RSP-1098 and RMB-1075. Very nice sounding units. The big question, I have asked Rotel with no answer. The question is, does the Dolby Digital processor when active boost the LFE 10db per Dobly spec's or does the user have to do this after the system has been calibrated via the sub menu for each processor?

Great site, lots of good people. Thank you in advance.

Using the built in test tones, I always set the sub 10db higher then the mains on every Rotel piece. There was mention that the test tone level was too low in one of the software updates, but 10+ has worked well on every software version I've used.

      Kevin,

Do you set the sub 10dB higher for all modes or only for "movie-related" modes ? I ask you because I set it at 0dB for Stereo, and experimentation with many movies has showed me that coincidently 10dB is what is missing for Dolby Digital. BTW, I have an RSX-1056.

      Thanks,

      Fernando

I want to thank all for their response. Dobly spec is to set the LFE +10 db and the rear surround -3 db. DTS is said to have the LFE +10 "Not built in". So my orginal question was does Rotel use the specified db settings when a processor is active or does it just seperate the signal leaving all of the balancing up to the user.

Isn't it fun being a audiophile?!!!!!!

Not positive, but I'm pretty sure there's no built in increases depending on modes.

I set the main speaker setup levels so the sub is 10db higher as a base. In the sub setup menu my Dolby Digital mode is zeroed, PLII, stereo, and music modes are 3db higher then the base, DTS is 5db lower then the base. I've found this to give me the most consistent bass across modes.

Kevin, I'm sorry if I wasn't clear. What I meant is that I leave the sub at 0db at the main speaker setup level, and add the 10dB increase for DD (only) at the sub setup menu.

Anyway, except for DD, it looks like you set your units "hotter" than I do. Maybe I should experiment more with Stereo. Thanks.

Reid, I apologize for interfering with your thread...

Ah, you can certainly do it that way.

                Kevin,
I like your way of managing the bass. I did boost the master level for the sub by 10 db using a meter. From this point I can use the sub menu to adjust to my ear. Thanks to all. BTW the dolby web site has many spec's for setting up your HT.

Well I have both the RSP1098 and C1 side by side and I have had the C1 a full week and have played CD, DVD, Satellite TV's and am ready to give a general comparison of strengths and weaknesses.

                  Bass management current status
                  by Dre J
The functions of the RSP-1066 are still the same as stated in my Bass management report.

The only difference is the ability to turn the Sub level to off for the different modes (Stereo, multi, dts, dd, etc.) with 1.48 (2.24) and above.

The multi-channel input is still the...

                  Bass Management Questions
                  by jakermc
                  Two quick ones:

How is everyone handling bass management for DTS sources? I've heard that DTS movies are mixed with LFE levels that at 10db lower than the overall mix, requiring a higher level set in the pre-amp. The RDC-7 is designed for this, and allows the user to boost (or lower)...
