    RB1080 - I spoke too soon

Well, I spoke too soon about Rotel fixing my RB1080 for free for the fuse blowing issue (it's not under warranty as I bought it used). They sent me an estimate for about $100 to get it fixed (and I already paid $50 to ship it to them). He insists that there is nothing wrong with the amp and I will have to pay for the resistor/Cap modification. He keeps blaming my setup, but I have another 1080 that works fine in the same setup. Ooh what a mess, I am very disappointed with the whole thing. I could have easily bought a new 1080 for about the same price ...

Just needed to vent... thanks for listening.

Nope, the warranty is not transferable.

Oh, that's not good for sales of used Rotel equipment. Ugh.

Hasn't hurt my used sales too much.

Good to hear, since I'm thinking about upgrading. Still, there's no good reason (that I can think of) for Rotel not to honor the warranty for the full 5 years, regardless of who owns the equipment.

Hardly any company provides transferrable warranties on electronic equipment, but many provide on a case by case basis.

I was told by Rotel support that the Warrantee is transferrable, but only thru a dealer. Therefore as a dealer, the Rotel product that you sell used is still under warrantee for the balance of the original warrantee period.

Bryston provides 20 year transferable warranties on all their equipment regardless of how many times the same item has been bought and sold. :T

But Bryston is in another league price wise too.

My rule of thumb for purchasing used equipment is that the PP needs to be at least 35% off of MSRP. Then any unexpected repairs will not hurt as much. Otherwise, I will always purchase new from an authorized dealer.

Sorry to hear about your unexpected out-of-warranty experience.

                          Dinnu,
What would you sell the RB-1080 for as-is? Send me an email.

Very true and the warranty definitely helps to keep the used market prices high.

I wasn't meaning to compare them directly (I've done that too many times before) but just to mention that that is one such company that offers a transferrable warranty over an insanely long time period. At the very least, it points out the disparity in manufacturer warranty policies that people should be aware of before they buy anything - new or used.
