Upgrade from RSP 976 to 1066?

I am thinking about upgrading from my Rotel RSP 976 to the 1066 solely because I would like to have 6.1 versus 5.1 sound. Is it worth it or am I just buying in to the upgrade fever?

I listened to the 1066 at the dealers with 6.1 and honestly I could not really tell any difference. I thought it would really make a big difference with fly over scenes in movies, etc.

I have the 1066 at home now and I don't think there is any difference in regards to the sound of it versus the 976 in terms of 5.1 sound.

My home theater is big enough to warrant the rear channel or channels but is this just a marketing ploy or is it really better acoustically.

    Thanks,

I'm a firm believer in the theory that a good 5.1 system is better than a mediocre 6.1 system. A well done 6.1 or 7.1 system can help fill in the rear soundfield and lend a more enveloping experience to the movie though. You may be better off improving elements of your existing 5.1 system like upgrading amps or speakers or upgrading your display for that matter. Especially if you don't hear any marked improvement with the 1066. Having said that investing in say the 1098 might be enough of an improvement to be worthy of the funds :P . You've got a lot of tough but fun decisions to make

I would consider the 1066 a horizontal move instead of an upgrade.. The 985 was the bad boy when you got your 976 and the 1066 was the realistic upgrade to the 976 as it was $500 cheaper then the 985.. I went from a 985 to a 1066 for PLII and 7.1, but did lose some sound quality.. It looks like I'm going to be going up to the 1098 before I even get around to getting my center rears though..

I went from the 985 to the 1098, sound quality difference wasn't that big. I was expecting a night and day difference. After living with the 1098 for about 3 months the upgrade was definetly worth the money.

          Adding a RB 1070 to RSP 1066 & RB 985 combination
          by Ross Smith
Thanks to Rotel, I have just had my faulty RSP 976 replaced with a RSP 1066 running a RB 985 Mk 1, I couldn't believe how much smoother and detailed the sound is. No more do I have to squirm in my seat when listening to D/D music DVD's and the CD stereo performance has me tapping my feet and listening...

          Upgrade RSP-966 to RSP-1066..Questions
          by patjoh
I have a RSP-966 processor today. I had a RB-985 but changed it to a Marantz MM-9000 power amp some time ago, mostly to get a slightly "warmer" sound.

I have ELAC 208.2 speakers, which are very revealling and sensitive to "colder", "brighter" electronics...
