    Small vs Large Speaker setting

    Curious about how the unit limits the processing for the speaker in this mode. I was told by my dealer that some processors reduce the entire dynamic range of the speaker when it is set to small - not only the bass /sub regions.

    Can anyone confirm the operation of the 1068 / 1098 in this regard?

      The RSP-1068 and 1098 software do not limit the dynamic range of small speakers at all relative to large - just the high pass filter to cut out bass at the specified frequency. The "dynamic range" compression effect can happen (in people's mind) with speakers when the frequency / levels of the cutover are wrong. For example in a SMALL speaker where the sub sit 2-3 DB too loud - then played at subjectivel the same volume - the rest of the frequency range seems subdued / squashed by the extra bass volume... This is a common auditory effect of SMALL speaker and system not calibrated with the bass level right.

          I noticed on the rotel site for the description of the 1068 it says it has dynamic range control... "Advanced microprocessors from Crystal Semiconductor handle Dolby Digital (complete with dynamic range adjustments)"

          Am i blind? Why cant i find the settings in the OSD that let...

          On my Rotel 1560, there are 4 settings for Dynamic Range Control (for Dolby Digital, True HD, etc). Min, Mid, Max, and Auto.

          What does "auto" do??

          Max means no dynamic range compression, correct?

          I get how dynamic range control works, but aut...

          I'm fresh out of ideas to solve my problem...
          I bough a new 1066 and it sounds like the "Dynamic Range" option is always engaged.

          Here is why I think so :
          1) Dolby soundtracks lack dynamics, DTS ones do not
          2) My old Yamaha receiver doesn't lack any dynamics...

          As most here are probably aware, there is a developing tendency in the music production industry to make the average level of a recording on a CD louder, especially on pop titles.

          Essentially, this means they are decreasing the dynamic range of the medium, and, in fact, even clipping...
