1098--No Subwoofer in 2 channel Stereo

Just hooked up my new 803(D)'s. Changed speaker setting to large on 1098. I played a CD and noticed no bass from the Subwoofer in 2 channel mode...strange. Plenty of bass in 5 channel mode and dolby pro logic mode. Under speaker setting I scrolled to "YES" for subwoofer. Any suggestions? Thanks.

You need to set subwoofer to MAX in order to have large fronts + sub. But that does lead to bass doubling (same information ran to the fronts and sub). I would suggest setting the fronts back to small and lowering the front crossover to 60 or so. You can set this to each individual sound mode, so you might just want to play around and see what sounds best in each mode.

      Renzo,

Even better - change you fronts to SMALL and pick a crossover of 60 Hz or 80 Hz (depending on the size of the speake and your listening preference). You then don't need to have SUB=MAX (i.e. np bass doubling) and the RSP-1098 will just always use the Sub except if you go for BYPASS mode on Stereo

Actually, that's not "even better", as that is EXACTLY what Kevin said!

Imo 803's are big enough to be playing without sub

In my opinion nothing outside of some 801's are big enough to be played without a sub. I even find the 802's alone just lacking bass for me..

That's the good things about opinions I guess..

I tried changing speaker settings to small and crossover to 60 and 80...still no sub activity on 2 channel mode. Changing Sub to max in LARGE speaker mode did not work either. When I change from small to large speaker mode...I have to turn off the unit for the change to kick in...everything was working fine before I upgraded the 1098 and bought the new speakers. I appreciate your help.

Maybe you're listening in stereo BYPASS? I think it's selectable by going into stereo mode, hitting the MODE button on the front, and then turning the selection knob. ??

Of course any change to crossover's should take immediate effect, so you might have a damaged digital board.

                  Good luck,

                  Kevin D.

Even when subwoofer is set to YES, you can still have selected subwoofer NO in MENU / SPEAKER SETUP / ADVANCED .

using the subwoofer withe stereo: I find that with my setup the bass sounds more integrated without the subwoofer. I realise that I get more bass with the subwoofer.

On my RSP-1068, you see on the front panel which speakers are activated for certain modes. I assume this is also the case for the 1098. I use stereo bypass mode, so only the LF and LR lights are active. Make sure you are not using "stereo bypass" mode, and that the "SW" light is on (although that just means that the SW is enabled, not that any signal will be sent to it).

I also found that I had to use "sub 2" output on the back panel, rather than "sub 1". There's no signal coming out of "sub 1" on my RSP-1068. I don't know if this is a setting I've screwed up, or a fault with my RSP-1068. Perhaps you should also try using "sub 2" output.

Sub 1 and Sub 2 should be the same thing always. Sounds like you sub 1 is messed up.

Slightly off topic, but I'd like to see Rotel apply FULL bass management to the next iteration of the 1098 (and all the other processors and receivers etc) in a similar manner to the Denon systems, which use 192KHz ADC's on the multichannel inputs.

Marcel, your advice was right on...I set speakers to "large", and then
set subwoofer to "MAX" under speaker menu. Then I proceeded to "advanced" and change settings to "MAX" to trigger the sub. Works fine now. It was multi-level adjustment. Thanks to everyone for your thoughts and help.

                              Hello!

I just got a ASW-750 subwoofer to pair with my 703s. I am wondering what I should set the low-pass filter at for optimum performance when listening to CDs in stereo. My guess would be the low frequency limit of the 703s.

I am also curious as to how loud others turn...

                              Hi
Just purchased a pair of N805 to replace my CDM NT7. I'm planning on using my subwoofer to help the N805 with the lower bass. What setting do other N805 oweners use for the high pass filter setting? I'm currently using the 50 Hz setting (the lower -3db frequency response for the 805's),...
