Yet another question about RSX-1067 hiss/pop

    Hey all!

I'm a first time Rotel owner, been eyeing the RSX since the introduction of the 1065. First off, I did find a good amount of info on the hiss/pop issue amongst the threads, but didn't find much info on my questions and issues specifically so I decided to start a new thread, I hope I'm not treading on posting etiquette.

So I just purchased the RSX-1067 last weekend. I was able to read up on some of the potential issues here on HTguide.com so I made sure to tell my dealer to get me a unit with a recent build date. I later wrote Rotel about about when the build date was and learned it was from May 2004. Though I really like my dealer, I was a little annoyed that he assured me I'd be getting the newest shipment which came in a month ago. I guess it's possible they did receive a month ago, but received an older unit from their distributors. Unfortunately I am unsure on how to see what firmware the unit is running since I haven't hooked up the OSD yet.

So far, my testing with the 1067 has mainly been 2 Channel. First, I love the sound, I'm coming from a crappy Sony receiver and the improvement in soundstage and imaging is simply amazing. The build quality of the Rotel alone is enough to make me love this unit. Of course after reading these posts about odd issues with Rotel amps & receivers, I stuck my ear to my speakers and immediately started fudging with the unit to see if I was unlucky enough to find some of the issues. My speakers are not great (next in line for future purchase), I am running JBL studio monitor 4208's (8ohms) with 4.5M PS Audio xstream prelude cables. I have not connected anything else to the 1067 other than my 2 mains, and a dvd/cd player.

I was in 2CH bypass mode and the first thing I noticed was a hiss from the speakers when there was no source...when volume is at 0 it was barely audible. Once it hits 1, it was very audible with my ear right at the tweeter, but not really audible from 6 ft away. If I put the volume up to max, the hiss was VERY audible, even from 6 ft away. I have read that some hiss will always be inherent in audio equipment, the question is how much is too much? What should be acceptable from the 1067? The volume of the "hiss" really seems to be subjective. I have also read on many of the posts what people refer to as "hum". I'm not sure I would call the hiss from my speakers hum, to me, hum sounds like a low frequency type noise. This hiss is not really audible when music is playing, but is volume dependent.

The other thing I noticed was a static pop noise. This one is a little bit more difficult for me to isolate. I first noticed it while listening to "Angel" by Sarah mclaughlin from the "City of Angels" movie soundtrack (HDCD). The song is primarily vocals and piano, so there isn't a lot going on. I started to notice an occasional abrupt, static pop. I eventually was able to reproduce it when turning the volume knob to increase and decrease the sound level. When I repeatedly turn the knob back and forth quickly, I am able to reproduce a static like clicking or popping noise as the knob is being turned. It does not happen as much if the knob is being turned slowly in any one direction. It still occurs, but not as frequently. The static pop sound is a lot more difficult to hear on songs that have more instruments and tracks going on. I then tried to see if I could recreate it when listening to radio. I also did hear a slight pop everytime I press the tune up or down button. I was able to recreate the series of static pops even when listening to the radio (AM channel, talking with silent environment). Again, it's faint, not like how some posts have described a loud pop or crackle from all speakers during multichannel play, and again this is going through 2 channel stereo only. It's an extremely subtle "click" noise.

I am still slightly afraid since I haven't even tested the 1067 in multichannel yet. I do have a Panamax 5300 and plenty of Virtual Dynamics power cords so I will be testing the 1067 using those peripherals today. I just don't know whether the things I am experiencing are the same as everyone elses issues, or am I just being paranoid and finding things to fit the description of exisiting issues? Should I contact Rotel about this first? or Dealer? I want to be as informed as possible so I don't fall prey to the potential "it's normal" attitude. I have also seen a few threads on how hot the 1067 runs, my unit runs hot as hell also. Even with only 2 channels driven, volume level somewhere around the upper 40's for about 20 minutes will make the unit almost too hot to touch on certain areas of the top of the unit. My unit is also sitting in the middle of the room so ventilation is not the issue. The heat does not bother me as much, but the other two potential issues do. I am, however, intent on sticking with the unit, I am sold on Rotel's sound (sans the potential issues) and build/material quality!

    Thanks!

This hiss you hear sounds normal. Not hearing it at the listening location is fine and turning it up to max will definitely get you hiss on almost anything.

The static pops is a problem with the digital circuit, so that may be why you're experiencing it on the HDCD more than regular CDs. But that said, it sounds like you have to do a lot of stuff you normally wouldn't do to produce the pops on CD.

Since you say it's a 'slight' pop, I don't think you have the same problem as most. The problem is typically a very loud and scary pop. You probably are just trying to pick up on every little small pop the unit makes normally as it is digitally adjusts volume and quickly loses and re-aquires a signal.

I would say enjoy you new unit and try not to find problems. If your unit is effected by the solder problem, you will know it easily.

The biggest mistake is to try and find problems. Soon enough you will make yourself crazy and think that there is a problem with the unit when there really is not. Just enjoy you receiver and if you ever run into an issue then I am sure that you will get the best service, from Rotel and your dealer, in the industry.

        Hello

have to say, i just bought the 1067 also, along with the 1075 5 channel amp, and the 1060 dvd player, i have had no problems at all, it just sounds wonderful

i did have a few minor issues, zone 2 was turned on, and the unit ran hot,but no harm done

after many hours of play time, i have to say, it's really settled in nicely, i'm no expert, but the sound is just getting better and better

i think, with all the info on this wonderful forum, all we see are the minor glitches and problems that can happen with electronics, only negative's, there are hundreds of happy campers for every one little glitch, i would think most Rotel owners never have any issues at all with the equipment, we start thinking there are goblins in everything

you will be very happy with it, my advice would be let the dealer set it up, ask lot's of questions, so you can adjust settings at your own pace,it's a great piece

        good luck

        one happy owner

        Kurt

          Hi,
I have the 1068/1075 combo, while listening to 2ch pcm, I get an occasional
"POP" sound from the rear surrounds.
The 1068 indicates that only the Front right , Front left and SW are active.
So why would I get the "Pop" sound from the rears.

I occasionally get a "POP" from the fronts as well.
          The firmware is 1.1.7

          Any help welcome

          cheers

            All,

Thanks for the speedy responses! I guess consensus seems to imply I'm just imagining things...haha I really hope that's it. I would rather catch problems early than later. Back to burn-in! Will update if anything else develops. In the mean time I would still love to hear other members views, maybe even something from KAP who seemed to have dealt in depth with some of the potential issues!
            Thanks!

I have a 1056 and a 1060 dvd player and coming from (denon, yamaha)jap equipment i must say that the majority of their products operate faultlessly.

The Rotel leaves them for dead in sound quality and power but i am a little dissapointed with my equipment for the following reasons.

Yes the hiss is there, is it a major issue? no not really but it is something that neither my yamaha or denon receiver had so everytime i switch the gear on and i hear it, it frustrates me.

The click/pops that you are hearing when dialing the volume up and down i expereince too. This is very annoying although it doesn't affect the sound reproduction and i not sure if it would be repairable.

I have listened to another 1056 in an oppositions store and we could not replicate the click/pop sound when dialing up and down the volume.

My other grip is the remote, i know some reviewers have praised it in but imo it is a pos. I think around 80% of keystrokes do no work the first time, i generally have to wave the remote in all different directions to get the receivers ir to pick up the signal. I have been standing in front of the receiver at times and it still doesn't work on the first press of the button.

This is with new batteries too.

Other than that i am generally happy with it, i will speak to my dealer and see if there is a problem with my remote as it is pretty useless at the moment.

                  Noddy,

The remote should work really well with the Rotel product. Any chance you have sunlight coming in, or a plasma around?

                  Kevin D.

The room is completely viod of any sunlight(dedicated room) and no plasma.

I am using an ir repeater, pretty sure it is a Xantech unit which runs straight into the back of the 1056 with the 3.5mm mini jack.

You can judge the strength of the signal being sent to the ir receiver which is mounted to the bottom of my centre channel, the weaker the signal the dimmer the red ir receiver light is.

I may have to move the ir receiver to see if that improves the signal strength.

Also the volume doesn't continually rise or drop when the volume button is held down, is this normal? Can this be changed in the menu?

I just would prefer it if the continually adjusted in this fashion. I have had a look in the menu's but couldn't see anything that would adjust this.

Also there seems to be two ways in which the remote sends its siganls, with regards to the volume it is visable that as soon as the rocker button is pressed the signal is sent.

With most of the other buttons there seems to be a one or two second delay before the remote delivers the signal.

Is there a option to change these buttons so it is immediate?

                      Noddy,

I appreciate your candid feedback about the RSX-1056 receiver. I am currently debating between the Denon AVR-3805 and the Rotel RSX-1056, and your comments have me now leaning seriously toward the Denon.

Let me say that i a+b the 3805 with the 1056, the places i found that the 1056 shaded the 3805 were in appearance, 2ch listening, low hz bass response, this was a positive for me and price.

I am sort of 60/40 music/dvd. My Klipsch reference speakers together with the Rotel is a great combination. I like the detailed sound they produce, not everyones cup of tea.

I found myself reaching for the remote at high spl with the Denon in 2ch, a touch edgy with hf. In multichannel surround sound the rotel just edges the denon out with a better front soundstage..............but my yamaha 2400 and the denon 3805 i loaned for the test didn't have ANY noticable hiss/pops/clicks, video dropouts and the remotes on both fuctioned well and were simple to program/navigate within a hour or two.......still haven't quite got my head around the buttons under the sliding panel on the Rotel 1050.

Remember this is only my opinion and expereinces, there are 1056 owners on the forum that don't have these issues. Trust me, i'm not the type to go and bitch and moan about products just for the hell of it but i do beleive these things need to be addressed and the best way to do it is on a forum such as this.

Hopefully i might be able to sort something out with my dealer and if i can have the click/pop issue repaired i will be more than happy.

I had an Rotel RMB 985 amp that had a hiss coming from the speakers, a 1067 receiver that made a pop in the speakers when I changed channel on my cable box, I went to a 1068/1075 combo and got the pop when changing channels as well. I now have an Anthem AVM 20 with no issues. I like Rotel but everytime I have tried one of their amps its popped or emitted so type of residual speaker noise. Everytime I have swapped out to Denon or Anthem, I haven't had the same issues.

I just read Noddy's post and that pretty well summed it up.Even with the semi-minor glitches I would still take the Rotel over Denon/HK/Pioneer etc....The Denons are fantastic at the price, well thought out HT avrs, the Denons are no prize for music. The Rotels are superior in sound and I've tried just about all the $1k+ ballpark avrs. The Rotels also have a user friendly set up and operation, imo.
