I sometimes get a snapping sound through my speakers when changing settings with the remote. It snaps every time it seems when I turn on Cinema EQ when watching a movie. It is a single snap through the centre channel but fairly loud. Sometimes the odd snap through the rear speakers when watching Sat TV. Anyone else experience this and is it normal? Thanks

Thanks for the info Kirby. Have you talked to Rotel about this? I would just like to know first before returning it is if this is just something that every RSX-1056 receiver does or if it is defective? Any other 1056 owners hearing this? I have also contacted Rotel to find out more. Thanks again.- Bottom

Last night while watching a movie ,when I switched the Cinema Eq on it would make a snapping sound. It is kind of almost like a static high pitch type of noise but it is fairly loud, almost makes you jump sort of thing. Tonight I was watching the Village and near the end it just snapped out the rear left speaker only. I wasn't making any adjustments at all. I have heard it before but mainly when watching Sat TV but tonight it was DVD. I am going to call Rotel tomorrow and see what is wrong with it. I have only had it a couple weeks so it isn't going in for a repair of any kind, they will have to ship a new one if anything.- Bottom

My 1 1/2 mos.old 1068 has done it twice, and as you say Thomas, it allmost sounded like static discharge. I will be curious to see what you guys find out, can you please keep us posted? Thanks. Come to think of it, my sub had the same sound once last weekend while watching irobot, that sounded more like when the voice coil contacts the magnet (@ 16years old "loud" is good, usually thru cheap speaks). I backed it up and tried the same track again at the same level, and nah-dah, so I wasn't pushing to hard.- Bottom

I spoke to someone at Rotel who told me to try a reset on the receiver. If that doesn't work he told me to let them know and they would contact the dealer where I purchased it. I guess they would likely replace it for me if it continues.- Bottom

Tried another 1056 at home with the older 1.1.7 software and it did the same thing. Hooked my first one with the 1.1.9 software on it up at the store in the service department to see if it would do it there and it did the same thing. They are going to contact Rotel about it. What are the chances of both of these units being defective though?- Bottom

Maybe Andrew could hook us up by passing this along to his contact @ Rotel and see if they are aware of anything accross the board. I was real skeptacle to admit this issue, after spending $$$, but, I am stuck on Rotel (like band-aid's stuck on me) and if there is a possible issue I would like to see it addressed. I don't feel it to be a "problem", just a nuscense. If it is an issue and could be dealt with that would be cool.- Bottom

We hooked up my first RSX-1056(1.1.9 software) at the service department where I bought it and we were able to get the snapping sound on their system as well. I spoke to a Rotel representative again this morning and I was told that a unit they had there in the office was making the snap/pop sound but that he had a 1056 at home that does not make the sound. From what I understand they are contacting the manufacturer in China to see if maybe something is wrong with the process or a bad batch of components(they didn't know what it could be really, just some possibilities). I suppose they are going to check some of the 1056's there in China to see if any of them are doing this as well. I think I am going to order another one and maybe it can be pretested at Rotel to make sure it doesn't snap/pop before sending. If it can't be fixed or if all the newest ones do this I may look at something different.- Bottom

I occasionally experienced the same static type snap on my old rsp-1066 a couple of years back when using the Cin EQ button, but then I migrated to the newer rsp-1098 and it still happens occasionally but not as much.
Is seems to occur when the humidity is low and static is prevalent in the house. My opinion is that the problem is more static related rather than to a particular piece or model of Rotel gear, but again, there may be a consistent design flaw that has carried through multiple designs.

Could be static in the air somehow, but my house usually has a fairly high humidity level. The two receivers I had before this one exhibited no snapping of any kind. It seems like Rotel has not heard of this problem much before though(or they don't want say) because it sounds like they are honestly trying to get to the bottom of it. It just shouldn't happen when you pay the money that they ask for these pieces of equipment.- Bottom

My 1056 v.1.1.9 has a single crack through the speakers with volume change, say at the start of a movie, as the title and credits start rolling and there is little in the way of sound.
As you dial up the volume to your prefered listening volume (for me around 69-72) as each increment changes on the display i get a crack from the speakers, now this happens as the volume increases and decreases but once below say 54 is not audible.
Anyone notice this with their equipment?- Bottom

I get a little pop when adjusting the volume on my 1068. Up or down. It's barely audiable. I have my volume set to mid. (2 step increments) However, there is no popping sound when manually turning the volume knob. That I can tell anyways.- Bottom

My Yamaha rxv-2400 volume was digital, never had this issue with it  allthough it did have it's own issues.
I love this receiver and it's sound but these small silly problems are kind souring the ownership of a new product. Give me a great power supply and real power numbers which produce this awesome sound, i hope we can get some feedback from Rotel in regards to this issue?
Can the volume increments be adjusted in the menu of the 1056? Had a look through the manual and couldn't find anything.- Bottom

On page 42 under Vol Speed it shows how you can adjust it for 1, 2 or 3 db increments. My 1056 doesn't seem to crackle or pop with volume adjustment at any level(so far). I wouldn't accept it crackling as my Pioneer 56TXi didn't do it with digital volume control.- Bottom

I am seriously lookin into getting the 1056, and when I was demoing the unit for 1h about, at one point I lower the volume manualy and I heard 3 short and quick "crick" from the sub I think. The saleman said that it was a static discharge, but I did not feel anything?
I was surprise that static on the front control could find his way to the speakers, never heard of this with other brand?
To be honnest I love everything about the 1056, but is a lot of money for me, so this "noise" issue and the other "hiss" issues making me nervous...- Bottom

I would make your concerns known to your dealer and if he is happy to do so test the 1056 at the dealers store beforehand. My dealer is still talking to Rotel about these issues.

I have heard from my dealer that supposedly almost all of the the newer 1056's have a problem maybe with a DSP board where there is a cold solder problem? This is likely causing the snapping/popping with volume adjustments/Cinema Eq/random snapping, etc. I was told that they switched out a board in one unit and it fixed the problem. This is the info I got from my dealer but don't take it as 100% fact. I am not sure if I want to send mine in for repair or swapping of a circuit board so I may return it for something else. I like the sound of the Rotel, but honestly there was not much if any improvement that I could hear over the Pioneer 56TXi that I had before it.- Bottom

Hi folks. As I stated earlier I too have experienced the snap sound through my speakers, the worst was through one of my rear speakers and I actually tested it to see if it was blown. This is my second attempt to own a Rotel product and I am once again disappointed. With my first Rotel receiver the video upconversion sucked big time. I returned the unit and went with a Denon, everything worked but the receiver was a pain if you wanted pure stereo since the speakers have to be adjusted in the menu from small to large and the sub has to be turned off. I got a HD satelite receiver which meant the video upconversion was no longer an issue so I bought another Rotel 1056. This one has the snapping sound so now I think I will go back to my Denon as it may not be the best but it does not do anything badly. I really want the Rotel to work but having read through all the problems people are having from blown amps, hiss, snapping, video issues, etc I believe Rotel has serious engineering or quality control issues.- Bottom

I spoke with someone over at the tech support today and was assured that they are doing everything they can, and as fast as possible, to try and pinpoint this issue and resolve it. I can not imagine that this was a design flaw that was just over looked. I have a RSX-1056 and do not have this problem. I had a RSX-1065 before this and a RSX-965 prior to that. I have never heard the problem that you are speaking of. When I compare what I paid for my receiver to what I could have paid for another brand, I do not feel that this is a very expensive piece of equipment. I personally feel that we all get a very good quality product from Rotel for a reasonable price. All companies are bound to run into a snag every now and then. Rotel is known for resolving issues as soon as they can. I do not doubt that they are putting all of their resources into resolving this one. I would urge you all to keep in touch with your dealer and give them a little time to find and fix the problem. When I read the posts hear I feel like everyone is so mad because their receiver is not exactly perfect. The issue will be resolved so just try and stay calm and give Rotel some time to try and fix the problem. Remember, they are just now hearing of this as well. These things can take a little time to track down and resolve. If you still want to take the unit back and get another brand then that is your choice and you will be missed. I, for one, am a loyal Rotel fan and will not be going anywhere.

GosonFletchy, is your 1056 fairly new or have you had it for quite a while now? Did the person you spoke to know anything about what I had heard(that they tried switching out a DSP board and it fixed it on one of them, and the older ones don't seem to have the problem)? It is just kind of dissapointing when you get something brand new, it has a problem and right away it may need a fairly major fix or have to be sent away for service.- Bottom

My dealer told me today that it may be as long as three months until this problem is fixed. I don't know if that is how long it will take to get the receivers that are yet to be produced with the fix into the supply chain or until they get the replacement parts to refurb the defective ones out there or what. It might be too long for me. What if it is never fixed 100%? That isn't acceptable as I just bought this unit and now I have to wait as long as three months for a possible fix or a new unit. I have already hauled two 1056's back and forth to the dealer around 5 times now. It was defective right out of the box.
My 1056 also seems to sometimes lose the proper signal on Sat Tv. When I am watching something in Dolby Digital it sometimes cuts out, sounds terrible/muffled and switches to pro logic, if I change the channel and back again it comes back. I have a Bell Expressvu high definition receiver using an optical cable.- Bottom

My 1056 snaps as well, with cinema EQ mode.
Doubtful that it is related to humidity, too predictable, and repeatable.
Didn't seem like that big of a deal to me, but I'll watch the thread and see what comes out of it.- Bottom

I've only had mine for a couple of days. No snapping, but I have noticed that on what appears to DD2.0 programming on cable, the automatic surround default to DPLII does not always switch cleanly. The center becomes recessed and seriously attenuated. If I go into the 1056 menu to the test tone, the DPLII immediately comes on full force. I also seem to able to get it manually if I press the two-channel button on the remote first and then press the DPLII button. I'm too early on in this game to make definitive pronouncements. I'm not sure whether the 1056's processing is uneven, the signal from cable is difficult for it to read, or I'm doing something wrong.Originally posted by ThomasJMy 1056 also seems to sometimes lose the proper signal on Sat Tv. That is what happens with mine on DD sat programming, sometimes it loses the DD and reverts to Pro Logic. The centre channel is muffled and the sound is kind of through the rears only but still muffled. If I switch the channel and back, DD comes back on again.- Bottom

Do you have the default for DD2.0 set to DPLII, as I do? Or is the 1056 just slipping out of DD and into Pro Logic on its own. It makes a difference. Not being able to move into a second-choice format automatically without a hitch is not the same as being unable to hold a format transmitted from the source or switching to another one out of the blue. I just want to be clear about the problem. Sorry that you've been having so much trouble. I know what it's like (with a Sony HDMI DVD player, not the Rotel).Originally posted by ThomasJThat is what happens with mine on DD sat programming, sometimes it loses the DD and reverts to Pro Logic. I just bought an RSX-1056, my first Rotel product. At first the biggest issue I had was extreme hissing. Thanks to other threads in this forum, I was able to figure out that it was a ground loop caused by my cable connection and solved it with $8 worth of RadioShak transformers. Now that the hissing is gone, my biggest problem is the random snapping, cracking and popping issue that the others on this thread have mentioned. It comes from all active speakers, but especially when a surround source is used (ie, DD, DTS and other DSP modes); in stereo, the popping is less frequent and only through the mains. Maybe my speakers are making it worse (N805's), but the noise greatly contributes to listener fatigue.
Who should I contact first about this - Rotel or my dealer? I don't know if I have patience to wait a few months for a solution that may never come. I have 30 days to audition and will likely return the receiver if I can't get this solved. It's a shame, because otherwise, because the sound quality and soundstage of this receiver is magical. I found myself listening to CD's I hadn't listened to for quite a while with a stunned smile on my face (and a few cringes whenever it popped)...- Bottom

Snap sound must be coming from the preamp stage...
I didn't mention this in my earlier post, but I have my 1056 hooked to a 1075 amp and I hear the pops so they must be coming from the 1056's preamp stage.
I've also observed that these pops usually co-incide with switching a mode (Ie cinema EQ) which leads me to believe some internal switching isn't working properly - almost sounds like a capacitor is getting shorted.

Two items:
1. I have had a 1056 for about 10 months. I also heard a very occassional loud snap (very disturbing!) when the unit was new. I tried to tie it to a specific mode or switching sequence, but it seemed truly random. The GOOD news, is, the snap disappeared after about three months of operation, and I am now "snap free"
2. Re Basementjack's previous post (and probably off-topic) I am thinking about adding a 5-channel power amp to my 1056 - always searching for the sonic holy grail. I am looking at a use RB-985 (100wx5) or a used Anthem MCA-5 (170wx5). Basementjack uses a Rotel 1075 (125wx5). Was the stepup worth it? Max SPL will not change much going from 77 to 100, 125, or 170w, but how about detail, control, slam, soundstage, etc?- Bottom

I just bought the 1056 today and thought it sounded great when listing to a cd and FM but once I got into a DVD I heard random loud pops/snaps from all speakers (not at once). It appears to happen when the scene of the movie changes. So anywhooo I am curious as to why this is happening and worry that it appears to be a common Rotel issue.
I hope it is just that it is very dry here...or that it is so new. Shall see.- Bottom

TommyJ, first of all thank you for pointing me to this forum from AVS.
I spoke to Rotel today and they said they are aware of the problem. It is a manufacturing defect. Seems the timing circuit has a bad resistor. They said they would replace my receiver with a new on and they have already spoken to him.
Great service. You should get in touch with them.- Bottom

Any update on this from Rotel? My 1056 has been snapping from time to time. Even my wife noticed yesterday and today when the back center surrounds snapped fairly loudly.
My 1056 is about nine months old. I would have it repaired under warranty if Rotel knows what the cause is. Otherwise, no hurry since it has a five year warranty.
