FYI: Not loud enough may be too loud..

Just a quick reminder of how important accurate measurements with a SPL meter is when setting volume levels..

Call me lazy, but I've been tweaking by ear for the past 6-8 months. After switching from my RMB1095+RMB1066 to the RMB1066 only and then back, I wound up just getting the levels all out of whack (thought I had an issue with the 1095, but it wound up being my EQ's were putting out too high of a level for the 1095's inputs to handle).

Anyways, I kept feeling like I wasn't getting enough rear volume, and every so often I would turn them up just a notch.. I got the latest DTS demo disc in and after a disappointing demo I decided to try out my new calibrated mic hooked to my Behringer8024 EQ/RTA..

Turns out I was 6db too high on the rears, and 5db too high on the center rears! What sounded like the rears weren't loud enough wound up being way too loud! I'm guessing that the loudness difference was so great that I was getting two separate experiences that just weren't meshing at all. I now once again have a seemless soundstage and no longer have any complaints about the rears not being loud enough..

Radio Shack SPL meters are cheap, get one now!

      Apartment Workshop
      by technodanvan
I could use some advice on setting up a workshop of sorts for finishing some of my projects. I'm active duty Air Force, so while I was in Tucson I would usually pack up everything I needed and go to Luke AFB in Phoenix. It was probably a two and a half hour drive each way, but the shop had everything...

I have from the BOM a 15 ohm metal film resistor. When I turn up concert DVD's, it gets hot enough to melt the high temp hot-melt glue, and make a smell my wife "notices". The crossover is not in the cabinet due to...

The problem I am having is when I listen to dvd music the rear speakers are very faint or the fronts are very loud. The rears are much closer to my listening area than the fronts but are...

      805s for rears
      by gross30
I am considering replacing my older Monitor Audio S9i's that I am using for a set of rear speakers, with a new set of 805s. They will match the 800's very well. (rosenut). My question is, will they provide enough as rears, or would I need a floor stander (804s,803s) etc. They will be powered by the...
