1098 & Tuner question

Does the 1098 have a built in tuner so you can listen to the radio, or do you need to purchase a seperate tuner? I looked over the info on the 1098, just can't seem to figure it out. I'm sure all of Rotel's receivers do, but do the processors as well? Any info would be awesome! Thanks!

it does not have a tuner built in... neither does the 1068.

Integrated amp = preamp + amp
Preamp/processor = 1098

Shieet. Another thing to buy with the 1098. Man that sucks, I didn't plan to unload another few hundred bucks on a tuner, are these seperate tuners better than the built in ones like my Pioneer Elite has? Will I notice better sound quality or less static? Just trying to figure out why they wouldn't have one built in?

I guess it has to do with flexibility. Some people like to mix and match components.

My impression of the Rotel Tuner is it is very good (I have the RT 1080). Whoever said Home Theatre wasn't a bottomless money pit (but a sh*t load of fun nontheless) was wrong.

Thanks Trevor, it's just bad enough the 1098 is over $2k, then add another $300+ for the Tuner, it's never ending I have experienced the bottomless pit in home theater and cars, I get MUCH more enjoyment out of the home theater than the car

If it makes parting with the money any easier, I own the Rotel RT-1080 and it is far better than what was built into my old AV receiver in terms of reception quality and features. If you don't use the tuner very often then you could always pick up a cheap secondhand analogue type on ebay for next to nothing. Or maybe a cheap new one from Yamaha, Pioneer, Denon etc.

Thanks JDH, I use the tuner A LOT, so it's very important, that's why I am kind of bummed it doesn't come with one and I have to buy one. I want a good one, so the RT 1080 will be my choice! Thanks!

I'm getting the RT-1080, I'll let you know what it's like when I get it and my 1098.

From what I've read, it's the same as other are saying, it's a very good tuner... One "nice thing" though is like they said, if you change your amp or pre, you don't have to buy another tuner, you can use this for as long as you need it...

I don't listen to the radio toooo much (mainly because I couldn't get that great of a reception, so I might listen to it more...

But I have to listen to the radio when the Steelers play, it's the only way to watch and listen to the game (especially since the TV announcers do a pretty bad job of it).

Like everything else in the HT, it's an investment!

In Europe, there is additional import tax on products with a tuner. For that reason there are receivers (e.g. Pioneer Elite) that are with a tuner in the USA and without in Europe.
For a smaller company like Rotel this will be a consideration when introducing a processor (NAD has/had a product with a tuner they called a preceiver)

After owning 3 processors (lots cheaper), these in addition to the stereo, and then 2 receivers I think seperates is the way to go especially because you can keep the amplification when upgrading the processor; it would have saved me a lot of money.

I really don't mind that my 1098 has no tuner; it works wonderful and on both surround and stereo a lot better than my previous Pioneer VSA-AX10.

Adding a tuner also increasese the noise floor in the processor which is why it isn't included...sonics first features second

No and no

In my case, I'm glad it doesn't have a tuner. It makes me feel like my money went towards only things I can use, rather than things I have no interest in. Kind of the opposite of the Yamaha receiver I once owned.

That's just he difference between a receiver and a pre-processor... Jason...

If you are looking for good sound without much work...then that's the way to go, you get all decent components all in one box... But if you enjoy the fun of seperates...then you can get all really great parts in multiple boxes that perform only one function each (hence giving you better quality).
