A3.2cr power amp overhaul and upgrade

Just had my Musical Fidelity A3.2cr power amp 'seen to' by John Sampson, the ex-MF guy.

This is the feedback I posted on John's website for JSaudiorepairs:

"I've had my A3.2cr power amp for some years and it occurred to me that replacing it to a similar standard, if ever that became necessary, would be costly. After seeing so many positive reviews of John's work it seemed a safe bet to have him overhaul and upgrade my amp; I was not disappointed. He has, I believe, replaced all the capacitors and improved the internal wiring. Power supply caps have been up-rated too... and it sounds like a new AND more powerful amp. Bass has more control, top end is cleaner and the sound is overall more 3D and images are more stable. Harmonically the sound is richer; the sort of effect one would expect if a much more expensive amp had been installed. Dare I say that amp sounds valve-like? And I don't mean in a cliched 'warm and cuddly' way. I mean that harmonically the sound is more life-like, more envolving, richer but with no loss of detail or attack. I wanted to save my self the anxiety of having to consider how I would cope if this old amp failed. Job done. relax and enjoy. Thank you John."

Now I've moved into proper retirement I am not planning to change much in my system, which is why I thought a relatively inexpensive amp overhaul was a very sensible move.

    What a great outcome.......

    ......the retirement part, that is........

No, really, bad jokes aside........having older gear repaired/refurbished/upgraded/modified is one of the best values I have ever encountered in audio.

Especially when it comes to power amps & Pre-amps, both of which I have had R&R'd.

If you are able to find top-notch technicians who really know what they are doing, you get wonderful gear back that will stand head-to-head with some of the best 'new' stuff out there.

So glad to hear another story of great gear saved from scrap yard.

Sometimes you can just find a friend that'll do it for you and knows a little about what he's doing...but when you get the component back it's a very noticeable difference.

And Yes, Dan (PewterTA) is the V good friend who midified my RB1090 Amp & put it in another league altogether.

Guess someone was feeling a little slighted there seeing as I forgot to give credit were due.......

        Shame on me! ; )

How Do I hook up amp to receiver?

I am quite embarrassed by posting this thread, but I will swallow my pride and proceed anyway.

I am new to this forum, but not new to home audio. However, for the last 12 years I have been running a 5.1 system with a Carver HR895 a/v receiver as my main component. The speakers have until...

            Hi everyone,

(new member warning - mods please move this thread if it's in the wrong place)

Now that I'm nearly finished building my Statement II's, my current receiver (Marantz NR1501 @7x50W) is too underpowered to drive them. Building these speakers (incl. designing/stuffing...

I have built a pair of subs to match my DIY bookshelf speakers, they're pretty basic and only need about 50 watts each max. I was thinking about getting on craigslist and buying the cheapest amp or receiver I could find just driving them with that and building a passive line level crossover. I found...
