    Upconversion - Who Uses It?

I understand what this option is, but I don't think I properly understand the ups and downs of using it, or not using it.

    What do people think?

Welcome to HT Guide and Club Integra! I guess I don't need to try putting together a detailed explanation of upsampling, but you might find a letter exchange about it in Stereophile interesting: http://www.stereophile.com/showarchives.cgi?282:4

As for ups and downs of using it, especially as implemented in the RDC-7, I guess that some Purists would say that modifying the data bitstream with this technique is an unjustifed tampering of the original. Some self-styled Objectivists could also argue that since there cannot be any more information than was already recorded, the technique has no objective merit -- that recordings have to start out being recorded at a higher bit rate to garner any of the benefits ascribed to using the higher rates. Self-styled Subjectivists, on the other hand could argue that here is more going on in human hearing than we can measure or fully explain with mathematics, and therefore, "something" is going on using the process that can have a positive impact on our appreciation of the recording.

Since use of the feature in the RDC-7 is user-selectable (not hard wired in) it is something we can experiment with and decide for ourselves. I happen to like it. Cymbals, for instance, seem to have more snap when the feature is turned on, and brass instruments have more bite. Even instruments such as bassoon and oboe sound more life-like. So I leave it on.

But to someone elses ear, it may not sound that way. So my overall blanket recommendation is to try it, and if you like it, if it "opens up" the sound for you in a more life-like way, use it. If you think it degrades the sound, keep it turned off.

      SP5000 DVI Upconversion Problem
      by dgineil
I saw post from Dean about DVD upconversion problems with an infocus screenplay 5000. Has anyone else experienced this? I also have an sp5000 and assumed it was a problem with the projector itself and not the dvd player. At this point I have tried a Denon 1910 and a Toshiba 5970 (with hdmi to dvi...

      HDMI Upconversion? is it 1080P?
      by Rolyasm
A few thoughts and questions. I see many recievers that "upconvert to HDMI" but don't list any specs. Does that mean they send 1080P over the HDMI, or could it be something else? The next step is that I am looking at Onkyo's 805 and 875. Both upconvert, but the 875 says it uses HQV Reon for...

      1098 video upconversion?
      by Steve B
I posted this over at Home Theater Forum, but figured this was a better place. Sorry for the redundancy if any of you follow both forums!

I just hooked up my new 1098 over the weekend. I haven't had any time yet to do any calibration and/or tweaking. I can't really comment on the 1098...

      Upconversion problems with 1056
      by Kirby
I just purchased a new 1056 about a week ago. I really like the sound although I am a littel disappointed with the level of hiss when the volume is high. My other problem is the poor upconversion from both composite and S-video up to componet video. The TV is displaying faint vertical bars when either...
