New Halo P7 multichannel preamp now shipping!

New press release just came out. FINALLY! I know a couple of our club members here have been waiting for this one for a while.

There's a few things about this final release model that I find interesting:
    - I like that it has TWO multichannel analog inputs, not just one. Can be useful for somebody that has one player for SACD and DVD-A, and another for Blu-Ray.
    - If nothing else, that means you can use this as a multichannel analog switcher.
    - Groovy that they're keeping the XLR jacks.
    - Interesting that this also mates with the Zhd for HDMI switching like the C1/C2/7100.

Visit this link here for the official release webpage and links to large photos:

Parasound Delivers Purist Analog Preamp for Stereo and Multichannel Audio in its Halo Family of High End Products

Parasound Halo P 7 Analog Preamplifier.

SAN FRANCISCO ( 8/19/08 ) – Parasound, the preeminent manufacturer of high-end audio components, has introduced an audio preamplifier designed for sound purists seeking superior low-noise performance from classic stereo sources as well as multichannel music and movies from Blu-ray, DVD-Audio, and SACD players. It will be marketed in the company's high-end Halo product line.

The Parasound Halo P 7 is both a two-channel and 7.1-channel analog preamplifier that is designed to combine outstanding audio performance while providing a flexible and easy-to-use interface. It will satisfy the most demanding two-channel audio purist who also enjoys multichannel music and movies. The Halo P 7 is also a lower-cost alternative to a surround processor if your TV can switch video inputs and you own multi-channel analog sources such as a DVD player, SACD player or Blu-ray player with multichannel analog outputs. The analog bass management for stereo sources makes subwoofer and small speaker integration easy. There is also a volume control bypass mode for users who wish to use their home theater receiver to decode digital sources. The Halo P 7 can also switch 1080p HDMI sources when it is linked to the optional Zhd HDMI switcher.

"With stereo or surround sound, silence is golden," said Richard Schram, Parasound's president and founder. "With its exceptional parts quality, heavy duty construction, outboard HDMI switching option, and balanced XLR input and output connections, Halo P 7's noise floor is a full 10 dB below that of a typical AV receiver, and you don't achieve performance like that with off-the-shelf parts. Our engineering team has worked miracles to keep this level of quality at an affordable price point."

The Halo P 7 user can adjust left-right / front-rear balance, make custom input names and match the gain for all 10 inputs, including a front panel MP3 input. Versatility includes balanced XLR connections, a low-noise MM/MC phono input and remote tone control. It provides RS-232 control, discrete IR codes, IR repeater input/loop jacks and three DC triggers invite system integration.

The Parasound Halo P 7 has a very simple and elegant front panel operation and style, with just two buttons and one knob to control most of its functions. The controls are of extremely high quality, and the control knob has an unusually solid, silky smooth operation, comparable to the focus ring on a high quality camera.

The Parasound Halo P 7 is currently available from Parasound Halo dealers at a suggested retail price of $2000.

Great news on the P7. Chris, do you think the P7 is an expanded version of the P3 or a new design that might be even better than the P3 in regard to SQ?

Chris, any chance of you getting a copy of the owners manual (pdf), I don't see these yet on the Parasound web site. I would love to see what this is all about.

Finally some excitement back in this Forum!

Did some more reading on this, though it may be a great preamp I already supplemented my system with the Zektor and got most of the functionality I would have wanted from the P7.

Looks like this is hitting the market too late. But it sure looks nice!

Since I don't see a set of bypass multichannel inputs I'm not sure how I would take advantage of this unit to be used in conjunction with my C2. I would either have to feed the P7 back into the multichannel inputs on the C2 or send the outputs of the C2 to one of the multichannel inputs of the P7, but that would leave only two available multichannel inputs in either case. That's only a net gain of one. Still I would like to see the manual to see if this is an incorrect assumption.

Actually, that's a good question--is this just a 7-channel version of the P3? Comparing the raw specs of the two units, it doesn't look so, and actually, the P3 looks to be even a bit tighter. Does this mean you'd be able to hear the difference? Maybe, but probably not, when you're comparing THD of .03% to .006%. So I think the answer would be that yes, it's a new design, but similar in function, expanding from a 2-channel to 7-channel setup.

Well, since Parasound says that it's shipping, I'm guessing that they'll put this up on their website very shortly, which would include the owner's manual and such. I wouldn't have access to it before that.

I think you're right, that you could use this as a multichannel analog switcher, but it would only be for two components. (in most cases, this would be at most all you would need anyway, one for a universal disc player for SACD and DVD-A, and the other set for a BD player if you don't use HDMI audio) Your setup would be to connect the two components to the P7 via the multichannel analog cables, and set the P7 to "volume control bypass". Then connect the P7 multichannel analog outputs to the C1/C2/C3 inputs.

It would be an expensive way to set up a switcher, and if you already have a C1/C2/C3/7100, wouldn't really give you any other functionality gains that I can think of. (unless you own something like 15 different audio components) But it sure would be classy and look cool--can you imagine what a stack would look like, with a C1/C2/C3, T3, D3, P7, and a stack of whatever Halo amps?

Ask and you shall receive. Parasound today added the P7 to their website, including the owner's manual and stuff.

Thanks Chris. I took a look, and using this in conjunction with the C2 is a no go, really no benefit.
