    C2 Auto Calibration..not so precise

I updated my C2 firmware yesterday and decided to run the auto calibrate feature rather than use a sound meter method. After auto calibrating, began to listen to some of my favorite vocalists, and found I had lost all imaging on my speakers. After double checking everything, I looked at the auto calibrated level setting and the mains were off by .5 dB. I matched them up and the vocalists returned to the center. I find that messing with a differance in levels makes a HUGE change in imaging and soundstage.

I would have guessed that the auto calibrate mic would be very accurate, but not so. I do much better with my trusty Rat Shack meter.

I can’t imagine how a half a db in level difference could affect imaging in any way, my auto calibration experience has shown the Halo to be quite accurate.

Upon further thought, I also know that the readings put one main speaker a foot farther than the other. To be honest, I don't recall which change moved the image back to center, but the change was most noticeable. I have phisically measured the distances of the mains etc.

After running the auto distance and auto level, I could not immediately discern what the problem was, all I know is that the systems imaging was shot. It almost sounded as if the mains were out of phase. After making the distances and levels the same, the image centered sharply. I had not had that experience before and found it rather disconcerting.

When I get some free time I will try again and compare results.

My experience is somewhat a mixture of you two. I've found the measured values to be pretty accurate, within .5db and maybe .5 feet. So after I do an auto-cal, I just message a value or two, to even them up.

        Works great, lasts long time...

I have had similar experience to Chris with the autocal as well in my C1.

Whoops... I meant "massage" a value or two, not "message". As in "tweak" a value or two.

              Imaging

Imaging refers to the ability of a speaker system to create a realistic and accurate soundstage, where the listener perceives the sound originating from specific locations within the listening environment. It is a crucial aspect of audio reproduction that aims to replicate the spatial qualities of the original sound source. Good imaging is essential for providing a sense of depth, width, and height to the audio presentation. When a speaker system has excellent imaging, it can...

How many of you are using the subwoofer distance that Auto-Cal provides?
              by Kingdaddy
I thought I would start a separate thread on this subject as I’ve seen a lot of questioning about many processors that have the Auto-Calibrate feature, not just the Halo. Most are questioning the accuracy and manually inserting the measurement based on a physical measurement, because the auto-cal...

C2 question on auto-distance calibration for subwoofer
              by jewel
              Hi,

I'm trying to use the auto-distance calibration on C2 to set the subwoofer distance. The measured distance is 3.3m, but the auto-calib sets it to 6.7m. Should I use the actual distance or the auto-calib distance?

Also, the auto-calib distances are different if I change...

What has been your experience with the auto setup of the Denon AVR3805?
I did mine on the weekend and oops ! It did the FL/FR/C distances correctly (12.5 ft for FL/FR and 14.5 ft for center) put the sub 21 feet away (shud be 15ft) and the SL/SR 10 feet away (shud be 6 ft) from the listening position....

Wow...... I just had an incredible experience with the 804S's which are surrounds.

This is tweaking to the max. I have a 5.1 setup.

First, just in 'Stereo' (2 x 802D's) you have to get up from the couch and double check that the center speaker is not on. Thats great imaging....
