    Speaker Placing

Can any of you fellow members help, I know it is not really an issue for this forum.

    I am setting up a 7.1 system.

I have the speakers for the surrounds a pair of floor standers and some inferior surrounds, my question is which do I place to the side and which to the rear. I suppose what I am asking is which of the channels is the most important

    Thanks Bob

The surrounds are more important than the rears. The recommended height for the surrounds is above ear level, as soundtracks are likely to be optimized for that location.

Here's how to place the speakers: http://www.dolby.com/consumer/home_e...oomlayout.html

Click on the "Dolby Pro Logic IIx" button for a 7.1 setup

Then the question is of course which of your speakers will actually work best as surround. Dipoles are ideal surround speakers, so if one of your pairs are dipoles and the other is not, then that's the pair that should be used for the surrounds...

FWIW, my setup is as follows:
    Fronts: Magnepan 20.1
    Center: Magnepan CC3
    Surrounds: Magnepan CC3
    Rears: Magnepan MC1

      dipoles

      Hi there,

Continuing on my quest to learn more about dipoles and HT. A common recommendation is to use dipoles for HT in the surround channels especially back and sides. I've seen that all the commercial dipoles for HT are boxed designs with 2 sets of drivers shooting in opposite directions....

Place your bets: Magnepan MG 1.7 vs Linkwitz Dipoles
      by sfdoddsy
Encouraged by Jon and the sale of my house, I got drunk the other night and bought a pair of Magnepan MG 1.7.

      They arrive this weekend.

      I have a return period.

They will be up against my Linkwitzy Dipole 'Bobs'. I recently remeasured and tweaked them for...

      RSX-1055 driving Magnepan MMG-Ws
      by jk@home
I plan on trying some Magnepan MMGs (as mains) and MMG-Ws (as surrounds) in my HT system. An external amp will drive the MMGs, using the Rotel’s pre-outs.

Is there a problem using the Rotel receiver's amps for the Maggie surrounds? The speakers are rated at 100Hz-16kHz, 88dB, and...

      Magnepan's in a 7.1 config

As many of you know I'm in the process of building a dedicate media room in my basement that will be 23 feet long by 12 feet wide and 7 feet tall. I currently have two pairs of SMG's that will become rears and sides, a single MMG that acts as my centre and my 1.4's which I'll use as mains. Now my room...
