Basic question about hooking up speaker

    Hi,

I had a rather simple question about hooked up speakers to an amplifier.

There are 4 wires on the cable that I got (bundle made of a red, black, white and green wires) and I was told to twist the red & white and connect it to the amp and then connect the red to a RED speaker connector and the white to the other RED speaker connector.

And do the same for the black and green cables as shown in the diagram.

Hence I am not using the JUMPER CABLES.

However, a friend of mine said to not go this route, instead twist the red and white wires and treat them as one - i.e. attach them to the RED connector on both the speaker and the amp. and do the same for the black and green wires.

And then use the jumper cable between the 2 red connectors on the speaker and 2 black connectors. According to him, this gives a better bass response.

I'm confused! What is the better option of connecting my speakers to the amp?

    Thanks!

    HI audio,
The first advice is correct as shown in your diagram. This will implement a classic bi-wire hook up. Many, including me, think this is a better way to connect speakers.

      :agree:

FWIW: You could experiment with both and judge for yourself. The merits of bi-wiring are always fuel for a debate.

When passively bi-amping a pair of b&w 803D's (or any of the other 800 series) with 2 identical stereo power amps, are there major advantages or differences between these two connections?

Connection 1 - (one 2-channel amp dedicated to each speaker)
        • amp #1 - one channel connected to HF posts of left speaker & second channel connected to the LF posts of left speaker
        • amp #2 - one channel connected to HF posts of right speaker & second channel connected to the LF posts of right speaker

Connection 2 - (one 2-channel amp dedicated to each frequency filter)
        • amp #1 - one channel connected to HF posts of left speaker & second channel connected to the HF posts of right speaker
        • amp #2 - one channel connected to LF posts of left speaker & second channel connected to the LF posts of right speaker
