    Transporting B&W DM604 S3 by plane

I am planning to go to Rome to buy my new speakers and bring it back by plane.

What advise can you give me to keep the speakers from being damaged?
Is its original packing strong enough to take care of any misshandling?
Should I take care for some specific thing in particular?
What shoud I do to increase the strength of the original packing?

Thank you very much for your advise, I am a bit worried about it ...

I brought my B&W DM602 S3s back from Europe by plane and it resulted in a very damaged box. Luckily, British Airways was good enough to give me back 100% of the purchase price of the speakers, even though there was no actual damage to the speakers.

My advise: INSURE THEM!!! It's so worth it.

      Speakers by plane

Anyone has an experience to share about checking speakers as baggage in an airline?
      how do you packed them?
Did you use the same cartons?
Did you somehow reinforced the cartons?

Thank you for your advise, I will certainly insure them.
If you were to do it again what would you do differently to minimize damage?
Did you checked them in their original boxes?

Yes, they went in their original boxes which was a mistake. Remember, these boxes will get thrown around like regular suitcases and they don't take it that well. If anything, pack them in the original boxes and the re-inforce them actual box. Don't know what you could wrap around it though, but the carton isn't strong enough to survive the handling.

I bought the 604 S3 a few month ago. I agree with P1et, you should definitly reinfoce the orignal boxes if you are planing to bring it back by plane (into a coffin maybe ;-) ).

You should also check how much it would be to send them to your place via dhl, ups.... I guess it would be safer.

mmmm, right I did not think of a coffin ... 8O
I checked in first place with those couriers, they charge almost as much as the price tag of the speakers ....

I am thinking of wrapping the original boxes with a layer of polystyrene and masking tape ...

                  HI,
What about shipping them via an air freight carrier? Possibly by ground or water freight? Or would that be too expensive or slow?? A wooden crate sounds like a good idea.

B&W ships worldwide. Why not check with them?

I looked into that and they charge an arm and a leg for shipping overseas. Carrying them on-board with you on a plane is your best and cheapest bet. Yes, you _might_ have to pay a little bit if you go over the maximum allowed weight, but with some re-inforcing of the original box you should be golden. I tried finding a pictures of my smashed box, and this was all I could find. You cannot see the gaping hole, but you can see the state of the box.

Where are you sending them to from Italy?

The 604's are heavy and a big box... Check with your airline carrier too.
They might be even more expensive than a shipping company.

Why buy from Italy? are they cheaper there?

It happens that I have to go there for other reasons so I want to take advantage of it and buy them. Here where I am there is not B&W representative so I would need to order them from Dubai, which is the middle east distributor. And if I tell you how difficult it is ...., I have 3 weeks waiting on them for the shipping and handling cost estimate, they seem not to care about my business, I already gave up. It takes lots lots and lots of patience to deal with them!

Looking to upgrade my speakers for HT/stereo. Right now I have: fornts - 602's, center - LCR60, sub - 600. I want to use the 602's as surrounds, upgrade center to LCR 600. The question is what to get for fronts. I'm looking for something that can produce a decent amount of base on its own without...

Recommendation for HT receiver or separates combo for DM604/601/LCR600 set up?

I have the following speaker setup:

                          DM604 S3 (Fronts)
                          M601 S3 (Rears)
                          LCR600 S3 (Centre)
                          SVS PB12 ISD (Sub)

I think I cheaped out too much on the receiver (Yamaha RX-v750). The Yammie has a nice array of processing modes for HT and the auto level set...
