Changing the tweeter on N802 ?

I have some strange noise going out from my N802 tweeter and i'm wondering if the tweeters can be changed.

The noise happened especially on voices.

    Hi,

    Absolutely. Two repairs are possible:
    1) New cone and voice coil (most likely)
    2) New Tweeter (not likley)

Your dealer can do either getting parts from B&W....

      some other questions:

      1- can i change the cone/voice coil myself ?
      2- how much $us for it ?
3- Is it a known issue with the N802's ?

      Thx.

The cone and voice coil change is relatively simple, but the tweeter exchange involves dissassembly of the mid range unit to get a the tweeter fixing arrangement..

Not to be attempted by the faint hearted.

I don't recall the price of the new cone and voice coil but I do remember is wasn't nearly as expensive as I thought it would be.

There is no known "problem" with the N802 tweeters.

Mine are roughly 6 years old.

Do you guys have the procedure for tightening/loosening the big bolt behing the mids ?

Luckily, those replacement tweeters are only around $90 with shipping. Plus they are very easy to change. :T

could i replace my actual cone and voice coil by the 802D ?

Is it much more expensive ?

DON'T TOUCH THE BIG BOLT!! :bluezoned: That's used to calibrate of the mid range amoung other things. Unless your mid range is changed out, best to leave that to your dealer.

The diamond tweeter on the 802D is around $1000.

1000$ for the tweeter or just the cone ? Has someone compared the old N802 and the 802D ?

                        Jlr,

You can't put the diamond tweeter code or the whole tweeter on the older 802 - the cone doesn't fit, nor does the tweeter... Also the crossover for the tweeter isn't compatable...

Re the 802D is is (for most listeners ears) a real step up from the already very good 802... Most rate it as souding better than the older 800 Signature.. And the old 802 was already very good

                        Geoff

Use cone or motor distance for estimating time alignment?
                          by owdi
When modeling an MT on a flat baffle, common practice appears to be to estimate the woofer delay by measuring the difference in distance to the listener between the voice coil of the tweeter and woofer. I can't site any sources right now, but I have read this on multiple sites and forums.

                          Hello Everyone,

I am new to the forum but not to B&W speakers My first set of B&Ws was a set of CDM1's, and then I upgraded to a pair of Matrix 802 S3s, and now I have a set of N802's which I've had for ~7 years.

                          A few years ago I purchased a HTM3S as I purchased...

Hi, i recently acquired a Nautilus setup with N802 and NHTM1 center channel. I am curious for other owners to ask how well yours match. Being very old I have no way to tell what they are "supposed" to sound like. When I play Pink noise for level calibration from my receiver the center sounds...

Does a scratch on a N802 tweeter affect sound?

Just picked up a set of demoed N802. Very clean speaker except for a scratch on the aluminum tweeter dome. There is no indentation, just a fairly deep surface scratch. Does this affect the sound? Should the tweeter be changed? I have not gotten the speakers delivered yet, so can not test the sound...

                          Preface

I started this article with the intention of offering a guide to DIYers, mostly those new to the field, that defines and explains the terminology you often see in discussions on the topic of DIY loudspeakers. Now, I have plenty of learning to do myself, and am under no illusion that what I do know is complete and correct. Because of this, I want these articles to be living documents. By that I mean, I'd like the DIY community to offer input on each definition to expand and clarify...
