Not very good pictures but…….B&W 703’s (the matching center is in the closet…), Rotel 1068 processor, Music Hall cd player and an oppo dvd. The 703’s are powered by an Adcom gfa 5500. Rear and surround in-wall speakers went with the ex/house so I pull my small quads from my bedroom system if I feel the need for more than a 2.1 system. The sub is a Velodyne spl-8. Hi marsboer,
The projector is new in your set (before was a lcd or?)
But you have change the room too?
And the Nemo is not "overkill" for the 805?

Sub great, Monocle XL too (I have the same XL) :W :W

You can view my "history" here if you are interested:

I do not have the Nemos, I have AW400 (also known as NADA). The difference beeing that Nemo is based of two bridged AW180s and AW400 of two bridged AW120s giving a total of 400W compared to 600W in the Nemos.
I do not use the AW400 because they have 400W. I use them because they are the best sounding Electrocompaniet amps in my opinion. So no, you don't need that kind of power to drive 805S, but that's not why I use them.
EDIT: Yes I'm norwegian :T- Bottom

I took a look at your history of equipment and it seems that we are on a similar path. I have gone from large high-end floorstanders back to stand mount speakers. How do you feel about the change from 802 to 805? Do you feel you have lost any midrange clarity by going from a three-way (802) to two-way (805)?- Bottom

Hi Mars,
I agree with AV-OCD: you had ib test the 802D but your choice is go to the
805 = in your room this little B&W speaker give you the best sound?
Is fo me important: changing from a big B&W to a smaller model depend much from what this speaker give you in your room!
I have classé Audio: but a friend have me always say the electrocompaniet have very great products! : the only "small/down point" is the $$$ inside electrocompaniet: sold and buyed more & more !! = if you go have a problem and you need a replace parts they are available??
well, with power ampli a "problem" is very rare.. but exemple the pre or the Great pure CD player EMP1 with philips transport is one of the top player: a reference!
with Cd player is more possible have a problem...->replace parts?!?
------------
A preampli like the 4.7 for the pure music dont give you much more as the yamaha? -> in place as xlr-cinch adapter "direct XLR"?
the new Nemo (they having nothing to do with "B&W Nautils speaker" like a lot of people think..)are used for the 805: the AW 120 x 3 is for the rear (JMLab-focal) and??? you have a extra channel that you use for?
your opinion over the mono 180! vs. the awr250!
Thank you very much for your feed back!

I would say that they are more or less equivalent. The 802D does however have a tad less coloration in the midrange/top, but I wouldn't say more resolution or clarity. But the 805S is actually sounding better on male voices to me. I just think the transition from the midrange to midbass is a bit better in 805S compared to 802D.
The bass is definitively better with 805S because it fits so incredibly well with my room. 802D was never even close to this, not because it's a worse speaker, but because the room sucked out everything in the midbass, killing all involvement, sounding less musical.
All in all I feel the 805S is a tad more colored than 802D, but a bit more coherent in the lower midrange. I would rate them about equal in experienced sound quality (imaging, 3D and resolution) if they are placed in matched rooms for their sizes. Hopefully that last coloration dissappears with 805 Diamond. I can't wait to listen to them!
I am much happier with 805S than 802D, mostly because they work so good with my current room, and because I bought them used so the sound quality/price ratio is through the roof in my current setup.
A comment on the midrange question:
I did compare 685 to 683 when I had those, and I felt that the 683 was a substantially better speaker, sounding less boxy and more open in the midrange. This experience is not true for 805S vs bigger FST models, just so you know it.
I did compare 805S directly to 683 when I replaced 683 with 805S at home, and 805S is much better in EVERY SINGLE aspect in my room. So do not for even a second think that 683 or CM9 can compete with 805S just because they have the FST-midrange.Last edited by marsboer; 06 March 2010, 19:43 Saturday.- Bottom

With colored I mean that it has a certain "character of sound". Another word for it would be that it's not entirely neutral in its presentation. This is not something you would notice just listening to 805S (or any other -S series speaker) but you will probably notice that "something" is gone when comparing directly to 802D or higher.- Bottom

Electrocompaniet's amplifiers has XLR only, so I am using adapters because RX-V3900 only has unbalanced RCA outputs. I am using Electrocompaniets own XLR to RCA adaptors
I would use XLR if I could find a processor with the same sound as the Yamaha receivers.- Bottom

Using phantom center is not something I generally recommend though, because it really depends on having a setup which have really good stereo imaging properties to really work. It is also necessary to have all seats within the "speaker placement square" in addition to good imaging to avoid the sound just collapsing into the closest speaker when moving off center.- Bottom

Please elaborate- "if I could find a processor with the same sound as the Yamaha receivers."
When I compared JC-2 to RX-V1800 in Pure Direct (using Transporter as DAC of course) which I had back then, it really was no contest. A dedicated high-end pre-amp is really quite much better than a crappy do-it-all receiver like the RX-V3900 or its like.
HOWEVER, the Yamaha just sounds so raw, involving and really brings out the feelings of the music. Blues really sounds like blues, and it also has rather incredible midbass. So I listened to my heart an threw the JC-2 out, even though it was much better as a pre-amp it wasn't even close to achieve the musical involvement I like so much from Yamaha receivers in my exact setup.
So I am basically looking for a pre-amp (I would much prefer a dedicated stereo pre-amp instead of a insanely expensive processor that still can't beat a good stereo high-end pre-amp for half the price) with the sound quality of the Parasound and the raw, in your face and very musical presentation of my Yamaha RX-V3900. In other words, I just love the match Yamaha makes as a pre-amp in my setup!
I am thinkin that a valve-based preamp may be the right thing for me. I stopped listening to my brain and started listening to my heart when selecting components a couple of years ago, and it has taken my setup to new levels in musical presentation, even though it also involves non-logical decisions like throwing out one of the best solid state pre-amps to keep a simple receiver.
It's VERY important to keep the Yamaha in Pure Direct when used for music though. As soon as i set it in STRAIGHT or any other mode, all things equal (withouth bass management, YPAO and such), it looses so much resolution and sounds just like the feelingless non-musical receiver most receivers usually sounds like when used in a good setup.- Bottom
