More experimentation
Been playing with the seup so I thought I would do a constructive post for a change (been a bit negative of late).
I have a few borrowed bits that are working really really well. Can't recommend these relatively cheap tweeks enough if you are not doing them already (I sound like a reformed smoker).
1. Moved my speakers from 90 to 140cm from wall. Its a long way into a 4m wide (deep) room but it still works in practical terms just.
2. Added softening elements where ever I could on front wall (regardless of the daggy look)
3. isolation feet on the CD player
4. borrowed constrained layer platform under the CD player (home made by a hifi club buddy)
All I can say is that if you have not done these simple things you are not hearing your system guys. This is more than just a tweak, its an essential part of getting any setup to sound as it should. Wish I had done it yonks ago.

No need to spend too much cash in order to acquire substantial gains in this regard.

Shadow, have you tried isolation on the CD player yet?
I suspect that Naim employ internal isolation, damping, or whatever on their more expensive players as it certainly improved the perfomance of the 5X. For a few hundred bucks It improved detail, air and control of bass, smoother more detailed top end.
It may have less impact on your player given its lofty position in the Meridian lineup, but then again you never know.Mac 8gb SSD Audirvana ->Weiss INT202 firewire interface ->Naim DAC & XPS2 DR->Conrad Johnson CT5 & LP70S-> Vivid B1s. I pretty much had folks in the club lining up to insist I tried these changes. The improvement in detail etc really took me by surprise. :T
I think what pushes you when you join a club is regularly hearing systems that guys have been fine tuning over a number of years. Its like playing in a decent football league. You experience lots of top performing "competition" (to keep with the analogy) and you get tips you can apply at home. Heard in isolation you don't realise how your gear might not be delivering what it is capable of.Mac 8gb SSD Audirvana ->Weiss INT202 firewire interface ->Naim DAC & XPS2 DR->Conrad Johnson CT5 & LP70S-> Vivid B1s. My 2.1 System Room
It must be summer, real quiet around here, thought i would throw up some new pics of my Stereo listening room. I am stuck with my 805s in the bookcase, Rel 305 is tucked behind the end table near the small window.
The equipment rack, I like having it right there beside you:
Close up of the rack:
Consists of Musical Fidelity KW500 (it's power supply is separate and on the bottom shelf), Marantz SA11S2 SACD player, Wadia 170 Ipod dock with PS Ausio Digital III D/A and Marantz TT15S, speakers are the 805s with REL 305 sub.

Finally got my Speakers!!!
I recently added a pair of 804s's and an HTM3s.
I am really loving these speakers. The highs are far more detailed than my Polks and the over all feeling is a fuller sound. Even my wife said it sounds more uniform.Panasonic TC-P65VT30

louhamilton,
A very nice setup, sonically and visually. They'll get better once they break in a bit.
One thing to consider is moving the HTM3S to the edge of the cabinet. This should clarify the mids and highs a bit. Having the center on the same plane, or close to it, as the mains really integrates the front three. The cabinet in front of the center channel will box it in a bit.
Hope this helps.- Bottom

I am loving the new Panasonic however, I have several windows directly opposite with vertical blinds and need to add drapes for daytime viewing. I had planned on adding them but now I need to accelerate the process.
I have a short window in which to purchase another two lcr600 S3 for future (4 years down the road) rear surround use at a great price and am trying to decide whether this is a good decision or deal with it in the future.
Any input / suggestions would be greatly appreciated.Last edited by GaryRanson; 11 August 2009, 01:19 Tuesday.- Bottom

Gary,
First, very nice system. As to getting some more LCR's, I would say yes. In a 5.1 or 7.1 system, the more symetrical you can make the speakers, the better. Identical speakers are the best option. Do you have rear speakers now?
Also, I love the fact that you have the front three on the same plane with each other. Very good integration. I would suggest that if you can, move the front three out to the edge of the cabinet. This would reduce the reflections coming off the cabinet, and open up the sound.
Hope this helps.- Bottom

htsteve,
Thank you.
I do not have any rear speakers currently and if I was to buy a pair of LCRs for the rear, they would sit in storage for ~3 years until such time as I move and can run some cables for the surrounds. I thought that down the road I would either purchase two 683 for the front and move two of the LCRs to the rear or purchase a pair of 685s for the rear.
When you say "move the front three out to the edge of the cabinet" should the front or the rear of the speakers be flush or just clear of the cabinet?
Thanks again.- Bottom

Gary,
If you are simply going to store the LCR's for 3 years, I'd pass on them right now. You never know what your situation will be in three years. Deal with the issue then. Also, I really like your plan of 683's up front and moving your existing LCR's to the rears (or even better, the 685's, which would match well with the 683's). That would be quite nice.
As to speaker placement, I meant that the front of the speaker would be at least flush with the cabinet. If you can go over by an inch or so, even better. For the center channel, this should be easy. Then match up the left and rights. I think you will like the results.
Hope this helps.- Bottom
