          atchudy:
Do you get any kind of stereoperspective with separation, height, width and depth when your speakers are so close together? I think you would get a major improvement in this area if you increase the distance between them to the distance from each speakers to the sweetspot. And the same goes for the distance to the backwall. These speakers should at least have 50-100cm of free space to the backwall to get the feeling of real depth.

How does the turntable work? Do you pull it out each time you use it?

Yup, I would say there is a few things you could do to improve this setup without needing to invest any $$$.

I suspect there is a WAF or similar involved. Either that or atchudy is yet to start playing with the possibilities.

Yesterday, I have received bookshelf speakers : B&W Nautilus 805.
              I am testing them.
But I now realize the importance of speakers cables...

              Next, later..

More likely it´s the arrangement of the speakers (stereo-triangle) or a different amp that will increase your listening-pleasure ;x(
Plus, your room is pretty big for the "little" 800s. You should think about buying a sub..

                Nice livingroom :T

I will try making them wider, but the house is only 12 feet wide.

There is no way I call pull them further from the wall.

Its tight, but it works well until i get a new stand and a wall mount.

What could i do to improve?

                  whats a WAF?

WAF = Wife Acceptance Factor. Sometimes a very good thing (as in my case), but often WAF means input on look and feel, as well as budget.

Also, see if you can move the speakers forward into the room and with more space between them. A few inches is all you might need. The intent here is to try to give them some space away from the entertainment center. Being close to an EC (and the right speaker next to the XBOX TV) will tend to compress the sound a little.

                    Hope this helps.

I live alone for now. If i move them forward even an inch i am worried they will get hit when people walk by.

Would it help if i could push the tv flush to the wall?

Would some type of fabric or sound insulaiton help on the opposite wall of the tv? there is nothing there but the couch.

Given the current set-up will toeing them in do anything?

                        Thanks for your message.

Be aware that the speakers were placed temporarily.
                        But I agree with you.

I have talked about the speakers cables because a friend of mine came with very good cables (about 700 euros) and the difference was significant (I have received mine when I have bought my DM603 S3).
We listened to a piece of music with an acoustic guitar and, with its cables, the feeling was much better, really !

For the amp, I think that the 2x100 Watts of Rotel are not bad.

My room is about 32 square meters, but only the half for music listening.

I understand about moving them forward. Try moving them out sideways. See how you like that. Then toe them in a little and see how that sounds. I've generally found some toeing in does make a good difference. My 802D's are toed in quite a bit. They form a triangle with my listening position

Putting the TV back as far as you can is a good idea. Anything to give the towers some breathing room. I would also consider moving the Xbox TV more to the right. Put it 'away' until you need it. Then pull it over for using.

It sounds like the couch is along the back wall, correct. You mention putting some fabric on the wall. Fabric is generally an absorber, used for taming. Do you feel your room is bright? Does it ring a bit?

The carpet in front of the 803's is good. If possible, I would suggest trying to line up the towers/system with the carpet. This would provide the same level of floor reflection coverage for each speaker.

                          Hope this helps.

Updated - 803D system in New Zealand

                                  Hi,

I have updated my system with the addition of a Marantz ST15S1 tuner and a pair Cambridge Audio 840W amplifiers (vertically biamped).

The 840W amplifiers are a nice improvement all round on the overachieving Marantz SM17SA amplifiers I was using - more power, detail and smoother.

The rest of the system includes:

                                  Marantz SA14v2 CD/SACD player
                                  Sony XA555ES modified CD player
                                  Jeff Rowland Synergy IIi Preamp

Yup - those 803D are big lads.

Do you have any critical listening habits? I would try grills off and maybe throw something over that cabinet in the middle. At least thats what I do and I find it very sonically pleasing.

Those curtains should be helping lot with your back wall so I would imagine that it sounds pretty nice already.

Well, here's my humble little system. Before I moved back to Japan, I sold everything except my speakers. Here is what my new system looks like so far:

                                                Marantz SR7002 AV receiver
                                                Marantz DV6001 DVD player
HTPC, PS3, Wii, and SkyPerfect satellite tv
                                                Sony Bravia 52"
                                                B&W Nautilus 805
                                                Velodyne SPL-800R

The Marantz sounds very nice, but it'll be gone soon. I wanted HDMI for the convenience of one output to the tv, but it's just a PITA. Might be going Arcam or McIntosh next. But I still love the way my 805+Velodyne sound! :P

Small system, but sounds so big! It's great!

By the way, I'm not sure why some of the pictures look like my items are curved. I guess I'm not very good at taking pictures. :B

Basically, everything on the Marantz does NOT output via HDMI although it's suppose to be able to. It only works on occassions. That's why it's a PITA to keep dealing with it.

                                                    Thank you!

Audioqueso, how do you like the Velodyne sub? The reason I'm asking is I'm looking at the minivee 8 and I believe it's similiar but I could be wrong. I can get the minivee for $499 through the military base.
                                                      Thanks

I think the Minivee is essentially the same thing. Technically, the weights are off by 2lbs. I don't know what that would be. The SPL-800R has the auto room measurement tool, remote, DSP (they actually work alright). I'm very happy with this sub. When I bought it, I had only one thing in mind; music. That's actually why I went with a sealed sub. Very fast and accurate. And most of off, I've had problems in the past blending in subs with the N805 (when I was auditioning subs at home). I like the way this blends with my N805's. You can get the SPL-800R now at the same price from audio advisor. I really don't know what's the difference as both of them had the same MSRP as well. Maybe it was just a marketing gimic. But I'm very happy with it. If anything, I might add a second one instead of upgrading to the DD series.

I finally had my 803Ds delivered to replace the N804s which have been relegated to the bedroom. Did a lot of listening over the weekend CDs, DVDs and BluRays (mainly music from Classical to Rock to Metal and I can say that they handled anything I threw at them whether it was Chopin's Nocturnes or the new Police BluRay with aplomb. I did not really listen to any challenging movies over the weekend (Kung Fu Panda), but I am sure that that they too will be very absorbing.

This completes any upgrades for quite a while and now my system consists of
                                                            B&W 803Ds (Front L/R)
B&W HTM3S (Center) – Yes I know I should get the HTM2D, but I will live what I have for a while. Strange thing is tonally the HTM3S seems to match the 803Ds tonally better than it did the N804s.
                                                            B&W DS8S Surrounds (Dipole Configuration)

They are not in an ideal situation, too close to the back wall and probably too high, but the compromise between sort of making them disappear and ideal position had to be made as they are quite large for wall mounted surrounds.

That having been said they sound good to me. I use them in dipole mode exclusively as I would have to get a ladder out to switch between direct and dipole. There specs are a little strange as B&W quote only 12KHz (+/-3dB) I think, but when I do the measurements using ARC and my Anthem they have a pretty good response beyond that.

Attached is a photo, hope this helps if you want an different angle let me know and I will try and take another photo.

I would say 60-70% of the pics I have seen include a Pioneer. I guess once you have B&W, you know quality when you see it.

Just unscrew the bass driver, tilt the speaker on it's side and the driver will come out. Reach your had in through the hole and grab the magnet (cover) of the tweeter and gently turn it counter-clockwise and it will turn and fall/pull away from the baffle. Just put it in (it's notched to only go in one way) and turn it clockwise until it stops and locks in. That's it.

I prefer 2 channel to HT so thats the way I set up my gear. Not too much equipment in the center to interfere with the soundstage. The turntable really clinches the deal! The vinyl must sound superb with the Classe/B&W combo. You have a talent with artwork and decor. One of the best setups so far! :T :T :T ;x(
