Biting the Bullet - Denon 2200

Well I bit the bullet today and bought a Denon 2200. :righton: Ecost.com have refurbished units for $289.00 with a 90 Day Manufactured warrenty.

I couldn't resist. I've been needing a decent DVD player but have been waiting for a universal. The Denon 2200 has been on my wish list, so much so that I've already purchased several SACDs and DVD-Audio cds. It should be hitting my door step next week.

Now that I have a decent player, its time to talk cables with Lex - :T .

This is a hot deal so get on it if you can:

That sounds like a heck of a deal. That's one unit I'm considering purchasing myself. I think Bing's been happy with his unit ( Bing, what do you think? )

I'm very anxious to get into some DVD-A and SACD titles I've seen in the stores.

    Happy listening and viewing.

Thanks guys. They're all gone. My major concern is that it is a refurbished unit. I'm waiting on pins and needles till it arrives.

Bing - when I get the unit I'm going to check out Bad Boys movie. I remember you were having lip sync problems.

Thanks EJ... I think it's a combination of the my TV, the Denon and the DVD. The Denon had the most percievable lag from various DVD players I have tested. But it seems localized to particular DVD's. Most play flawless, however the main culprit is my TV. We were watching the Friends Final Episode that I had recorded on VHS, it had lots of lag. I may need a Sound Processor with an adjustable audio delay...

Once you seen the image quality of the Denon, there is no going back. Not to cheaper, lesser DVD player at any rate.

At Half the price of what I payed. it's a worth while gamble. :P

Congrats on the Denon 2200 Eduardo!! :T
We need to start a Club Denon here at the Guide.

              Anyways, what a great price.
The cables will cost you more than the player.

I know. I plan to get some interconnects for the DVD-Audio and SACD first and use my current component cables. Later I'll upgrade my component and digital cables.

Trevor, no, the cables won't cost more than the player. Of course, that depends what kind of cables he wants though.

Silvercats? Yes, more than the player. Kingcats? More than 2 players? lol.

EJ, I'll be around when your ready to order.

Congrats EJ... you stole that 2200... don't you feel just a little shame? :B

                    I know I wouldn't!

I don't think I'd let the refurb thing bother me. I believe they are all refurbed by Denon and from what I've read in the past they do a marvelous job with refurbs. My Denon 2900 is a refurb and I haven't had any problems. You would have never convinced me it wasn't new.

Welcome to the Denon DVD club!

                      Congrats :T

I just wish I was able to wait the 6 or so months to get the 2200 myself instead of my 1600... But I needed a decent player and I suppose DVD-A is better than nothing

Trev - I think a Club Denon is a great idea.

Well, I got the player yesterday and it looks brand new. I immediately hooked it up and we started watching Schindler's List. Allison and I immediately noticed better PQ over the Sony. I also hooked up some the 5.1 with some cheap cables so I can test out SACD and DVD-Audio.

The manuel could be better. It only covers the setup of the player and does not cover any of the front panel buttons.

Heres my first issue. I inserted Pink Floyd's DSOTM and it recognized it as CD. On the front panel I pressed the SACD Setup button to Multi but the player displayed "No Play". I had to open and close the tray for the player detect SACD Multichannel. Is this normal?

EJ, I don't have that disk, and currently I'm not set up for Multi Channel SACD operation. Maybe make sure it's selected in the set up menu. The front panel has a button that toggles through Multi and Stereo operation for those new formats.

I know when I get a no play situation on some backed up DVD's (DVD-R)

I have since upgrade dthe firmware for my DVD burner and for the Denon 2200, and have not seen the No play situation lately.

How do you upgrade the firmware of the Denon 2200?

I did go through the setup so that for SACD it automaticly selects Multi. But if I hit the front SACD button to compare the differant layers the player display "No Play". The only way to fix that problem is to open and close the tray.

EJ, if you have Diana Krall Live in Paris on DTS DVD or Aliens trilogy DTS, try playing those. My player really had a hard time with DTS tracks until I flashed the firmware. Now it fixed :T

Those above DVD titles are well know problems fo the 2200 with older FW.

My Eagles DTS did not play well either before the new FW.

Well, I'm very pissed right now. My new (refurbished) Denon 2200 has quit working. I try playing a SACD or DVD-Audio disc and just says loading. When take out a disc they're burning hot and so is the tray. I don't know if I should return the unit or send it in under warranty. This sucks. And I'm still getting the no play issue.

                                    :M

I would send it back, unless Denon will service this for you locally... I would probably send it back due to lack of confidence in the player now.

I agree bing. I already sent an e-mail to the account manager that helped me with the purchase. When I spoke to him on the phone he said returning the player would not be a problem and would get a full refund if product is defective. But after reading the return policy, it seems my only options is to send it to manufacturer for repair or pay a 15% restocking fee (about $45). Ecost.com offices are only open during the week so I have to wait till Monday to find out the real deal.

Bottom line is I'm returning this player reguardless. And probably will end up buying it locally at MSRP -10% :M :x  The picture quality is great and sound too, from the little I've listened.

I read on a couple of forums that there were some issues with the 2200/2900/5900 players from Denon regarding SACD/DVD-A playback...

and a firware upgrade didn't fix it either
apparently Denon Japan are looking into it...

                                                  so...

                                                  just a thumbs up...and my 2Yen

I hope you find something soon.
I know how excited you were about the Denon.
I hope a good deal comes your way!, I really do.

Thanks guys. It was a real bummer to have to return the player. Hopefully, I'll find a deal as worth while.

I have a Denon AVR-2800 running Paradigm studio 40's, 20's, and CC, v.2, and a PW-2200. Since the Denon 2800 only has preouts for the fronts and center and I use the "B" speaker input for a second zone so I need a new receiver rather then adding just an amp.

What better tonic on a Friday (and a snowy one at that....) than to be forced to sit at home and play with my new Christmas present, the delightful Denon 2200. This review is going to be audio-based; for hi-res, cd layer and dvd playback.

I just want to make the right decision. All these players I can probably get for about the same price. I just found the Pioneer 47ai for $550 and I think it is a...

I'm looking consolidate some gear. I have a S9000ES DVD/SACD player thats been recently retired due to it exibiting some erros. I now have my Panasonic RP91 in my rack. I also have a SCD-C555ES multichannel SACD/CD player in the rack.
Question is: Will the Denon 2200 be as good or, better via...

                                                        Hi,
I am looking at the spec of Music Hall CD25 . It has Burr-Brown 1732 24-bit/96kHz DAC.

                                                        Denon dvd-2200 has Burr-Brown 24-bit, 192-kHz DSD-1791 Audio DACs

Are these DACs from the same company? and Denon has 1791 while Music Hall has 1732 (burr-brown). I assume...
