    East Coast and hurricane Sandy

We would like to wish our East coast friends, particularly in NY/NJ area well. Many of them cannot log in now, of course, with power out for over 6 million people. I understand at least one person was killed even into Canada as a result of this storm and at least 16 in the US, and our coastal waters, as the

HMS Bounty 3 mast ship sank in the Atlantic off the coast of North Carolina tragically. All but 2 people survived, and as of yesterday, all were accounted for except one, the Captain. The ship was in movies dating back to 1962, and as recent as a the Johnny Depp second Pirates movie, and more.

Sympathy goes out to families that have lost loved ones, homes, property, and to entire communities devastated by Sandy, such as the 50 homes burned to the ground in NY in an area called Breezy Point..., I believe it was.

Stay safe as the water levels continue to be high in those areas people!

HTG is serviced out of California, so we should remain strong, however there are issues with connecting services all along the east coast and those will continue for days to come.

Yeah, things look terrible down there. Hope all our members are safe.
Too bad about the Bounty. It was built right here in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia especially for the film Mutiny On The Bounty

Agreed! It is a bad situation. I heard on the news that the woman killed in Toronto was hit by a sign that blew off a building. Very sad.

I know in my area we had 60 mph winds last night and I live 350 miles from the coast. Also just spent half the day at the airport only to have my flight to Chicago cancelled.. The best bet is to stay home...

The only thing I don't get about the Bounty was that they sailed right into a hurricane!!??. I don't get it. No one should have been on the water knowing what was coming no?. These people are sailors and have access to the radio and weather conditions no?. Seems like a stupid call to be on the water knowing there is a hurricane in the area no??.

As one of HTG's token New England members/admins, we survived with minimal damage here in ManchVegas. The power went out for about 5 minutes last night, short enough that I didn't have to shut down my computers, and my MythTV system could record DWTS in its entirety for Heather, which we watched after the power came back on.

Prayers go out to those in the NY/NJ/VA who got dealt with the brunt of it. I have some relatives in NJ, but they're far enough from the coast that they should be ok.

The bounty started taking on water, and lost propulsion. Loosing propulsion meant they could not control direction. according to the owner, they were trying to go out to sea to avoid the hurricane. They said where they were at, and their plan was calculated, and the boat would have been safe if it had not had mechanical issues, and taking on water. I am sure a lot of people were second guessing that decision. Any number of decisions might have been more sound.

I saw this image this AM on CNN, what devistation for that breezy pointe area. Unreal. It's like they were incinerated.

Doug, was that the neighborhood that caught fire? Man that's rough. And so crazy how it just stops and one house didn't get touched, yet it's direct neighbor burnt to the ground.

I do believe this was breezy Pointe, so yes, I think it is the neighborhood that burned to the ground, I think it was a result of fire that started in queens around a business district, and this is an extention of that, if I understood correctly. But I know nothing of NY/NJ really, so I am going by what I pieced together from reports. It is devistating for these people.

Although there's not a great deal of difference in a house that is completely ripped off it's foundation, and the house broken apart, than this, I guess maybe you might save something from the alternative. Nothing here to save, that's for sure. Sift through for some gold/jewelry maybe, that's about it.

Kevin, I did think about you, being in the general area, and checked to see that you had logged in that AM. :-)

I read this story today, a sad story with a bright spot.

Sad sad story here, about 4 kids that their parents were killed by Sandy. The eldest is 19, she's faced with racing her 3 siblings. What an incredible amount of courage she is showing. Stronger than most anyone I have ever met. Amazing.

What a story of people coming together to help this young family without parents: The goal was to raise 5000.00 to help support them until their money became available, everything of the family's is tied up in probate I guess. They raised almost 57,000.00 for them! Heartwarming story considering what they face as 4 kids with the oldest 19.

I just cannot imagine being 19 years old and being responsible for 3 kids, even if one of them is an older teen of 17. She's amazing to just try to take care of her sibblings, her name is Zoe.

I sent my donations to the Salvation Army & the Humane Society over a week ago.

I encourage those with the financial ability to make contributions to the organization of their choice or volunteer time if at all possible.

                          Our neighbors need our help.

Yes it is Breezy Point, a gated residential neighborhood surrounded on three sides by the Atlantic Ocean. Approximately 100 homes burned to the ground, and others were damaged. Firefighters were prevented from getting into the neighborhood by heavy street flooding from the storm surge. It is believed the fires were caused by broken gas lines. The strong winds cause flames to leap from one home to the next. Embers were reported to be as big as baseballs.

Other nearby neighborhoods like Gerritsen Beach and Belle Harbor also suffered substantial devastation, with homes being washed off their foundation. Some may recall that on November 11, 2001, just two months to the day after 9-11, Airlines Flight 587 crashed in Belle Harbor, killing 5 people on the ground and destroying dozens of homes. Now, they face more disaster.
