McIntosh Not Getting A Bad Rap

    Hi Everyone,

I have just joined the forum and looking forward to reading about everyone's experiences and opinions.

I'd just like to say that it is a nice change to come to a forum where people don't continually rubbish the McIntosh brand. I am a big fan of the brand and whether McIntosh meets your personal taste in audio or not, you cannot deny it is a quality product.

I just got sick of people continually rubbishing the product who have never even owned it or auditioned it simply because it is an expensive product. Unfortunately it is expensive and I wish I could afford more. Obviously there is a lot more class here!!!

Anyway, it is a pleasant turn of events and I am looking forward to reading more and sharing with you guys!

I have zero experience with the brand but I have seen them in high end audio shops and they are 'old style' looking components and very attractive looking.

I used to sell the brand back in the late 90's. I thought the amps were about as good as you could get. The look was way cool, too.

If I had the money, I'd have some McIntosh amplification in my system and would have a dedicated 2 channel setup with McIntosh tube gear. Alas, it will likely never happen (children and their college funds make it hard to fully splurge on audio products) but I do not begrudge those who both enjoy and can afford that gear. Just as I don't begrudge my neighbour for his brand new BMW.

The 'old' Bose speakers from the 70's were pretty good!. My first decent speaker system were Bose 501's circa 1976, Direct/reflecting design. I was very impressed by the sound at the time. Only once I got a relatively decent set of speakers did I realize that there was something in the audio world that goes by the name of "midrange" and "soundstage" that was somehow missing in the sound!!. Audio evolution never ends......it just keeps getting more expensive is all!!!!.

Most people who listened to music in the 70s will have fond memories of the 901. Bose was not a dirty word in those days. My flatmate in London in 1976 had a pair of Bose 301 speakers and they sounded great.

So.... I FINALLY had the chance to home-audition the McIntosh like I've been talking about for weeks. Unfortunately, because I took too long, I was only allowed to keep it for two days since they needed it back for Sunday. No problem. Two days is better than nothing.

                  I got to home...

New Dilemma - Rotel or McIntosh
                  by asg420
                  Hello all -

Well, I spent a large portion of my afternoon at a different audio/video dealer. To cut the story short....here's where I am at...

I heard an REALLY enjoyed the Rotel 1098, 1095 through B&W 802's - Clean, warm and distinct. Very hard to beat.
