Effect of High Ceiling on Acoustics

Subjects were removed last night a on a place my wife and I bought, so it looks like a move is coming. The new place has 18 foot ceilings in the room where the HT will go. The place was empty when we checked it out and I noticed a echo, but it wasnt too bad. I assume that will get rugs and furniture gets in.

What else should i look out for? Are bigger speakers likely needed?

I think you have hit it on the head. The room should be pretty live without anything on the floors(especially hardwood) and all that wall area(uncovered by anything put on the walls)will do the same. More power/bigger speakers may or may not be necessary. Depending on your system you may just have to turn that volume knob a little farther clockwise than usual. As long as your amp can deliver and your speakers can accept that much you might be fine. This is always a good excuse in a room of this size to inform your better half that you might need these to "Fill" such a large room:

The MIRACLE of room treatment, my experience
      by Blazar
I just swapped out a pair of 802N for B&W 802D speakers recently and did notice a significant improvement. I'm not sure if the 802D are just way better or that the 802N were just never good enough.

Besides the speaker change I knew I could improve my 20x24 room with vaulted ceilings...

Listening room measurements / How'd you do it?
      by pearsall001
I presently have a GIK monster bass trap & two Echo busters corner traps. The difference they made was quite noticable. I want to take it further w/ more absorption panels, bass traps, diffusion panels, etc. but first I'd like to measure my room's acoustics. With room measurements I can then decide...

Room acoustics and treatment options for 803D based system
      by indiebands
We plan to move to a new house soon. It is a rental, so we have to live with the space pretty much as is. It is obviously not an optimal “listening room” but I wanted to ask what kinds of room treatments I should consider (there will be a carpet in the listening triangle).

      My current...

      Serious room treatment effort

      Hi all,

I’d like to thank all on this board :T for all of the great insight on gear. It’s been great and I’ve had a lot of fun with the setup. After using some nice gear for a while, the next step is to make sure the room acoustics are maximized prior to thinking about the next steps...
